Interesting Facts
Harrison fought in the Civil War. Because of his grandfather's reputation as a successful general, much was expected of Harrison. Intent on proving himself worthy of his heritage, he fought in more battles in six months than his grandfather had in a lifetime. Harrison raised his own regiment and ended up a brigadier general. Coming in second to Grover Cleveland in the popular vote, he won in the Electoral College and was pronounced the twenty-third President.

http://www.angelfire.com/apes/westlegends/Harrison.htm
Benjamin Harrison (August 20, 1833-March 13, 1901) Benjamin Harrison, (1833-1901), 23rd President of the United States of America. Inaugurated 100 years after George Washington, Benjamin Harrison was known as the "Centennial President." He inherited a distinguished name. His grandfather, William Henry Harrison, was the 9th president of the United States. In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. Ranked today as an average chief executive, in his own era he compiled a strong record of constitutional government that enabled the country to approach world power with prudence and caution. Compared with strong, appealing leaders like Jackson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt, Harrison was greater as a man than as a president.. Early Life and Education President Benjamin Harrison's father was John Scott Harrison (1809-1878), the only American to be the son of one president and the father of another. After college, John Scott Harrison managed a 2,000-acre (800-meter) family estate at North Bend, Ohio. In 1831, his first wife having died, he married Elizabeth Irwin, from Pennsylvania. The new bride eventually reared nine children.

Whether you are a political campaign memorabilia buff, an historian or an antique enthusiast - The President Benjamin Harrison Home, which is now a museum dedicated to his life, is a must see when visiting Indianapolis. Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was President 100 years after George Washington, which made him the Centennial President. The Harrison Home houses some 3,700 artifacts and 2,440 books. About 75% of the artifacts in the home actually belonged to the Harrison's. In the home the visitors see ten of the rooms with period furnishings and Harrison items. The third floor, originally a ball room, houses exhibits. A new exhibit opens every six months with Harrison Home artifacts and borrowed artifacts. Textiles, dresses, and other artifacts are displayed through out the house.
Home of the 23rd President of the United States
So often, when one thinks of politicians, one thinks of lawyers. While it is true that many politicians happen to be lawyers by trade, nowhere is it more evident than in the occupation of the Presidency. Twenty-six have held the occupation of lawyer. Amongst those gentlemen are some rather distinguished names such as Founding Fathers Adams, Jefferson and Madison, Supreme Court Justice Taft, and Franklin Roosevelt. For lawyers, that would be rather exclusive company to keep. Who's the best of these lawyers? Benjamin Harrison.

Benjamin Harrison
Benjamin Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, a small community west of Cincinnati. He was the son of a Whig Congressman and the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison . In 1854, Harrison graduated with honors from Miami University of Ohio and briefly considered entering the ministry, but chose instead to study law in Cincinnati. He later opened a practice in Indianapolis where he hoped also to launch a political career. Breaking with his father's old line political ties, Harrison joined the new Republican Party and worked on behalf of John C. Frémont in 1856 and Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Harrison commanded Indiana volunteers in the Civil War and was promoted to brigadier general following his heroic leadership in the Atlanta campaign . He took a furlough during 1864 to campaign for pro-Union candidates in Indiana, a fairly common practice during that era. Following the war, Harrison returned to the law and frequently spoke out on current political topics, notably his support for the Radical Republican Reconstruction plan . In 1876, he ran for governor of Indiana and lost. In 1881, he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the state legislature; he was noted for his ardent support of Civil War

Benjamin Harrison was a safe, clean, and loyal Republican. Combined with the cachet of being the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, those traits proved to be enough to win him the 1888 GOP presidential nomination. Once in office, he practiced a generally aloof style of leadership, which led even his supporters to view him as an "iceberg." This drawing of Harrison is thought to be a preliminary sketch for a large formal portrait by Eastman Johnson, which hangs today in the White House. Benjamin Harrison
Twenty-third President (1889-1893) Unidentified artist, woodcarving, 1888
This folk portrayal of Benjamin Harrison is a memento from his 1888 presidential campaign. Among the noteworthy aspects of the contest were the funds raised to promote Harrison's candidacy. Built up largely through donations from eastern businessmen who warmly supported Harrison's call for high protective tariff, his presidential war chest contained in excess of $3 million. It was an extraordinarily large amount in the late nineteenth century.

Served as president from 1889 to 1893 Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), was the only grandson of a president who also became president. He defeated President Grover Cleveland in 1888, but Cleveland regained the presidency by beating Harrison in 1892.
Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe. Both Harrisons ran for the presidency two times, winning once and losing once. Before being elected president, both had been successful army commanders and had served in the United States Senate. Benjamin Harrison won the presidency with the help of a Republican campaign song called "Grandfather's Hat Fits Ben."
Harrison's presidency
Harrison did more than any other president to increase respect for the flag of the United States. By his order, the flag waved above the White House and other government buildings. Harrison also urged that the flag be flown over every school in the land.
Congress passed the Sherman Antitrust Act during Harrison's administration, and provided for the building of a two-ocean navy of steel ships. The American frontier disappeared as pioneers took over the last unsettled areas of the West. Six new states joined the Union. Women squeezed into whalebone corsets so they could wear the new "hourglass" fashions. James A. Naismith originated basketball, and a lively tune called "Ta-ra-ra-boom-de-ay" helped usher in the period of the Gay Nineties.

    Autograph Letter Signed
    December 9, 1880
    RECTO
    VERSO
Twenty-third U.S. President, great grandson of William Henry Harrison. Served through the Civil War, brevetted brigadier general. U.S. Senator elected president 1889.
ALS, 2 individual sheets, 8vo., Indianapolis, Indiana, Dec. 9, 1880, on decorative letterhead of the "Law Office of Harrison, Hines and Miller" Harrison writes to Carl R. M. Kelly of Louisville. He responds to an editorial in the Louisville Commercial of the previous day.
"Your editorial on the senatorial question in Indiana is so very kind and complimentary to me...The attempt to make it appear that there was or could be any personal unfriendliness between (?) and me was the work of those who were not friends to either of us. His withdrawal sets many mutual friends free to act for me."
In 1880 Harrison was chairman of the Indiana delegation to the Republican National Convention. Here he played a leading role in nominating Garfield for President. Harrison was suggested as a alternate presidential candidate but refused as he had been elected to US Senate that year. An interesting correspondence with good political association. Excellent.
