HABEAS CORPUS

Writ from a judge that spells out the charges under which a person is arrested or detained. It comes from old Latin words that mean "to produce the body" of the arrested person before a judge. The writ protects citizens from being illegally arrested and detained. The U.S. Constitution states that the privilege of habeas corpus may not be suspended, unless in cases of rebellion or invasion when the public safety may require it.
HALF-BREEDS
Competing faction within the Republican Party during the administration of President Rutherford B. Hayes. They were opposed by a coalition of Union veterans, radical Republicans, and party bossesled by Senator Roscoe Conkling of New Yorkwho called themselves "Stalwarts." The main issue between the two concerned the proper division of federal patronagewith the Stalwarts opposed to civil service reform. The Half-Breeds also favored leniency towards the South, moderate reform, and the candidacy of James G. Blaine of Maine. When Half-Breed President James A Garfieldwho was opposed by Conklingwas assassinated by a deranged self-proclaimed Stalwart, the terms Half-Breed and Stalwart quickly fell from common usage.

WISCONSIN HACKER CHARGED WITH MILITARY BREAK-IN
WASHINGTON, D.C. - One of the founders of a hacker group called 'Global Hell' was arrested and charged today in a federal complaint alleging he hacked into a protected U.S. Army computer at the Pentagon, and maliciously interfered with the communications system, the Justice Department announced.
The defendant, Chad Davis, 19, of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was also know as 'Mindphasr,' according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Green Bay. Davis was a founder of the hacking group also called 'GH.'
The complaint alleges that Davis gained illegal access to an Army web page and modified its contents. Davis is also alleged to have gained access to an unclassified Army network, removing and modifying its computer files to prevent detection.
U.S. Attorney Thomas P. Schneider said, 'even though the intrusion involved an unclassified Army computer network, the intruder prevented use of the system by Army personnel. Interference with government computer systems are not just electronic vandalism, they run the risk of compromising critical information infrastructure systems.'
Schneider noted that, as alleged in the complaint, the intruder was the subject of an FBI-executed search warrant earlier this year. In spite of that, it appears the defendant continued to gain unlawful access to computer networks.

Benjamin Harrison Nominated for President on the eighth ballot at the 1888 Republican Convention, Benjamin Harrison conducted one of the first "front-porch" campaigns, delivering short speeches to delegations that visited him in Indianapolis. As he was only 5 feet, 6 inches tall, Democrats called him "Little Ben"; Republicans replied that he was big enough to wear the hat of his grandfather, "Old Tippecanoe." Born in 1833 on a farm by the Ohio River below Cincinnati, Harrison attended Miami University in Ohio and read law in Cincinnati. He moved to Indianapolis, where he practiced law and campaigned for the Republican Party. He married Caroline Lavinia Scott in 1853. After the Civil Warhe was Colonel of the 70th Volunteer InfantryHarrison became a pillar of Indianapolis, enhancing his reputation as a brilliant lawyer. The Democrats defeated him for Governor of Indiana in 1876 by unfairly stigmatizing him as "Kid Gloves" Harrison. In the 1880's he served in the United States Senate, where he championed Indians. homesteaders, and Civil War veterans.
