    ELISE LINES WRITTEN IN AN ALBUM; CIRCA 1858 by: Bret Harte (1836-1902)
      ROSE thrown on the drifting tide
      That laughs along the tinkling brook,
      Tho' here and there it idly glide,
      Finds rest within some sheltered nook:
      And thus some heart tossed on the stream
      Of time impelled by passion's breeze
      And folly's breath may find a dream
      Of hope upon thy breast, Elise!
    "Elise" is reprinted from The Writings of Bret Harte , Vol. XX. Ed. Charles Meeker Kozlay. Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1914. This poem was originally published in the Overland Monthly , September, 1902. MORE POEMS BY BRET HARTE RELATED LINKS BROWSE THE POETRY ARCHIVE: A B C D ... Email Poetry-Archive.com

    MARY'S ALBUM by: Bret Harte (1836-1902)
      WEET MARY, maid of San Andreas,
      Upon her natal day,
      Procured an album, double-gilt,
      Entitled, "The Bouquet."
      But what its purpose was beyond
      Its name, she could not guess;
      And so between its gilded leaves
      The flowers he gave she'd press.
      Yet blame her not, poetic youth!
      Nor deem too great the wrong;
      She knew not Hawthorne's bloom, nor loved
      Macaulay-flowers of song.
      Her hymn-book was the total sum
      Of her poetic lore,
      And, having read through Dr. Watts,
      She did not ask for Moore.
      But when she ope'd her book again,
      How great was her surprise
      To find the leaves on either side
      Stained deep with crimson dyes.
      And in that rose his latest gift
      A shapeless form she views;
      Its fragrance sped, its beauty fled,
      And vanished all its dews.
      O Mary, maid of San Andreas!
      Too sad was your mistake
      Yet one, methinks, that wiser folk
      Are very apt to make.
      Who 'twixt these leaves would fix the shapes
      That love and truth assume,
      Will find they keep, like Mary's rose,
      The stain, and not the bloom.
    "Mary's Album" is reprinted from

    Bret Harte tackles Jones
    in his poem "Off Scarborough"
    Read more poems about JPJ Scores, perhaps hundreds, of artists have been drawn to the legend of John Paul Jones, crafting it into paintings, plays, songs, poems and stories. James Fennimore Cooper, Alexandre Dumas, Herman Melville, Sarah Orne Jewett, William Makepeace Thakery and the American novelist Winston Churchill are among the famous literary names who have taken a whack at depicting Jones. And let’s not forget Bret Harte (1836-1902), the cowboy poet, whose "Luck of Roaring Camp" and other works helped pump up the literary legends of the American West. By comparison, Jones’ rip-roaring reputation in 19 th century America was an apt character for Harte. Like many writers, Bret Harte focused on the famous battle between the BONHOMME RICHARD and HMS SERAPIS for his poem "Off Scarborough". The date of the poem’s appearance in Scribner's Monthly , (vol. 16, issue 4, August 1878) indicates it was a centennial tribute to one first and one of the bloodiest naval battles in American history.

    Author
    Bret Harte was born in New York State, but in 1854, after the death of his father, his family moved to California. By the end of the decade he was writing clever sketches of frontier life for the San Francisco magazine Golden Era . His short stories, such as "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," published in the late 1860s, provided ample proof of the rich literary potential that was to be found in the rough-hewn life of his state s gold-mining frontier. Harte, a restless soul, left for the East in 1871. In both Boston and New York, he found himself lionized as the West's most brilliant and promising writer. Nevertheless in 1878, Harte took a position as a commercial agent in Crefeld, Germany. In 1880 he became U. S. consul in Glasgow, Scotland, but, bored by the town and his duties, he traveled frequently to London and moved there in 1885. John Pettie, a Scotsman living in London and a member of its Royal Academy, was known for his historical paintings and portraits. The artist was clearly proud of this portrait, for he exhibited it at the Royal Academy in 1885 and at the Jubilee exhibition in Berlin the following year before he gave it as a gift to the sitter, with whom he had become friends.
