Bret Harte

Bret Harte
was born in Albany, New York, and at the age of eighteen traveled west with his widowed mother to California, where he held a variety of jobs: school teacher, Wells Fargo messenger, typesetter, and newspaper editor. In 1864, Harte became secretary of the Californian Mint, a position that left him ample time to write. Four years later, in 1868, his short story "The Luck of Roaring Camp" appeared in the Overland Monthly and Harte's reputation was established almost overnight. Harte's first volume of stories, The Luck of Roaring Camp, Tales of the Argonauts A Sappho of Green Springs Colonel Starbottle's Client The Bell-Ringer of Angel's (1894), and Condensed Novels
