Walter Hawkins was born a slave in Georgetown, Maryland. After being sold to a slave-dealer, Hawkins escaped to Philadelphia. He moved on to Canada where he became a Methodist minister. In 1890 Hawkins was made a bishop Methodist Episcopal Church . With help f rom Celestine Edwards, Hawkins wrote his autobiography, From Slavery to Bishopric spartacus@pavilion.co.uk for details. Last updated: 2nd May, 2002 (1) Walter Hawkins, From Slavery to Bishopric
In the happiest moment of their life, there arose in some an irrepressible desire for freedom which no danger or power could restrain, no hardship deterred, and no bloodhound could alarm. This desire haunted them night and day; they talked about it to each other in confidence; they knew that the system which bound them was as unjust as it was cruel, and that they ought to strive, as a duty to themselves and their children, to escape from it, as the slaves in Jamaica tried to do in 1732, unknown to them, and later as their neighbours in St. Domingo succeeded in doing: and such was the state of mind beneath all their singing and dancing that, had they means as they had desire, there would have been no slave-holder to talk about the happiness of his slaves.

Walter Hawkins was born in Georgetown, Maryland, in 1809 to slave parents. His mother died when he was quite young and although he could not remember much about her, he and his siblings soon came to realize the glorious emancipation that came to her at her death. Her lot to be numbered with the dead was better than the life she endured being whipped, degraded and forced to witness the selling of her children into slavery. Walter was too young to remember his brothers and sisters and therefore only had recollections of two brothers and two sisters. When his slave master died, the mistress and her son were forced to offer Walter for sale. They allowed him time to say good bye to his loved ones and to collect his things. He vowed that when darkness fell on his allotted time he would escape. Hawkins' Chatham Connection During his years in slavery Hawkins had worked as a farm labourer, waiter, lamp lighter, grocer and minister of the gospel. He had never owned a home of his own. His son, whom he depended upon for some time, decided that it was time for such a reward. He secured the land and recruited the friends and followers in the Chatham area to assist financially and physically. With heartfelt assistance the home was completed before the winter of 1866. Rev. Walter Hawkins died on July 16, 1894, leaving behind his wife, Mariah Francis, sons, Jackson Hamilton, Walter Jr., one daughter Mary Elizabeth, a sister, Helen Taylor, and several grandchildren. His daughter, Ellen Hall, predeceased him, leaving several children who were mentioned in his last will and testament.

Walter Hawkins
B i o g r a p h y "There's always been controversy around modern versus traditional gospel. What is tradition anyway? Gospel music doesn't have a particular style. Gospel's go to progress,' says Hawkins, "We (The Edwin Hawkins Singers) have probably one of the major crossover gospel songs of all time with "Oh Happy Day" and it brought in a whole new generation of listeners. That song broke more than gospel music barriers, it helped launch Hawkins' career. At the age of 19, this Bay Area native hadn't considered a musical life. His recording debut actually came anonymously when he sang in the Ephesians Church of God in Christ's youth choir, a Berkeley, CA - based church. To raise money to attend a convention in Washington, DC, the choir, directed by Hawkins' older brother, Edwin, recorded an album, "Let Us Go Into The House of the Lord," in 1968 to sell locally. Astonishingly a song from that album, "Oh, Happy Day," became a pop hit the following year, selling over a million copies. In the next few years, the Edwin Hawkins Singers toured nationally and internationally before Walter set out on his own. He entered the ministry and in 1973 founded the Love Center Church in Oakland. With $1,800 borrowed from his mother-in-law, Hawkins returned to Ephesians with his Love Center Choir and recorded a live album, Going Up Yonder, released on Light Records, rode the gospel charts for months in 1975 and became a mainstay on Billboard's Gospel top 40 chart for three consecutive years, making it one of the decade's biggest selling gospel albums. More than 300,000 units were purchased.

20. Interview Dec 2002 - Walter Hawkins
Interview with Walter Hawkins December 2002. VA Let's talk about the Walter Hawkins look from back in the day. WH - Ha! (Laughs).

Interview with Walter Hawkins
December 2002 Thanks to my good friend, Vincent Allen, for sharing this interview with us. In the fall of 2001, I had the privilege of meeting another Jesus Music legend, Walter Hawkins, founding member of the legendary Edwin Hawkins Singers of "Oh Happy Day" fame, pastor and choir director of the Love Center Choir and leader of the his family ensemble, the Hawkins Family. Our meeting was here in Atlanta after his delivering a sermon in a local church. Vincent Allen - I listened to the introduction of you tonight and immediately wanted to ask, how you feel about being referred to as a "Gospel Legend?" Walter Hawkins - I suppose that in a sense it's a real honor, however I have this sense that I'm still in my beginning stages. When people remind me, especially when young people come and say, "My mother or my grandparents were into your music." -They remind me that we've been around for a long time. But I always have this sensation that I'm just beginning. So it's hard for me to relate to something that's legendary. VA - How many years would you say that it's been since you began in Gospel Music?
