Chronology Biography Nathaniel Hawthorne, who once described himself as "the obscurest man of letters in America", achieved success as a writer only after a steady and intense struggle. During the early years of his career, this self-assessment was mostly accurate, but the publication of The Scarlet Letter During this time he lived a relatively withdrawn life devoted to developing his literary art. Hawthorne wrote and revised stories as he sought a style that would express his creative energies. Writing did not provide an adequate income, so like nearly all nineteenth-century American writers, Hawthorne had to take on other employment. He worked in the Boston Custom House from 1839 through 1840 to save money to marry Sophia Peabody, but he lost that politically appointed job when administrations changed. In 1841 he lived at Brook Farm, a utopian community founded by idealists who hoped to combine manual labor with art and philosophy. Finding that monotonous physical labor left little time for thinking and writing, Hawthorne departed after seven months. After their marriage in the summer of 1842, Hawthorne and his wife moved to the Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, where their neighbors included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Amos Bronson Alcott, and other writers and thinkers who contributed to the lively literary environment of that small town. Although Hawthorne was on friendly terms with these men, his skepticism concerning human nature prevented him from sharing either their optimism or their faith in radical reform of individuals or society.

NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE: 1804-1864 In the historic town of Salem , well remembered for its sad delusion concerning witchcraft in colonial times, and better famed in New England tradition for many brighter and happier events, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born, July 4, 1804. William Hathorne, first of the line to appear in the colony, was an associate of Governor Winthrop, and was known as a persecutor of the Quakers; John, his son, was a judge, and left an unenviable reputation as a bitter searcher out of "witches," relentless in the treatment of his victims. Many of the Hawthornes were seafaring men for during those years Salem was a thriving seaport and practically controlled the rich East Indian trade. Nathaniel's grandfather commanded a privateer in Revolutionary times and figures as the hero of the ballad on Bold Hathorne . The novelist's own father, also Nathaniel, was captain of a ship at an early age; he died at Surinam only four years after his son was born. From the shock of this event Mrs. Hawthorne never recovered. To the end of her life, forty years afterward, she lived in seclusion, rarely emerging from her room, even taking her meals apart from her children. Hawthorne's Childhood Under these peculiar conditions the child who was destined to take his place as the foremost writer of fiction in America, and one of the world's great romancers, passed into boyhood. It is not surprising that peculiarities of temperament were developed, or that even as a child he was lonely, sensitive, and shy. His father was a sea captain and descendent of John Hawthorne, one of the judges in the Salem witchcraft trials of 1692. He died when the young Nathaniel was four year old. Hawthorne grew up in seclusion with his widowed mother and he leaned on her for emotional support and vice versa, and this situation Hawthorne carried with him into adulthood. Hawthorne was educated at the Bowdoin College in Maine (1821-24). In the school among his friends were Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Franklin Pierce, who became the 14th president of the U.S. Hawthorne's best-known works include The Scarlet Letter The House of the Seven Gables (1851), and The Blithedale Romance (1852). During this productive period Hawthorne also established a warm friendship with Herman Melville, who dedicated Moby-Dick to him. In 1853 Franklin Pierce became President and Hawthorne, who had written a campaign biography for him, was appointed the consulship in Liverpool, England. He lived there for four years and spent a year and half in Italy writing The Marble Faun (1860), a story about the conflicts between innocence and guilt. It was his last completed novel. Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Salem Years 1804-1836 Hawthorne's Ancestors Great Great Grandfather: Major William Hathorne - emigrated from England Great Grandfather: Colonel John Hathorne - Judge at Salem Witch Trials Grandfather: Hathorne - Sea Captain Father: Nathaniel Hathorne - Sea Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne 1804-1864 The first Hathorne (as the name was then spelled) in the Colonies was Major William who landed with the first settlers in 1630 and became one the community's leaders. He mercilessly persecuted the Quakers when they came to settle. The Major's son, Colonel John , carried on this persecution tradition by serving as one of the judges at the infamous witch trials of 1692 in Salem which passed death sentences on nineteen convicted witches. John is buried in the Salem Burying Point cemetery, walking distance from the Seven Gables Historic Site . Hawthorne writes about these two ancestors and the cemetery in the preface to The Scarlet Letter. Judge John Hathorne's tombstone is encased in granite and reads "Here lyes inter'd ye body of Colo. John Hathorne Esq. Aged 76 years who died May 10th 1717." At the top is a winged death's head, symbol of mortality, and on the sides and bottom, three five-petaled rosettes, symbol of the brevity of earthly existence.
