Hay Relief Effort Seeks Help From Trucking Industry
By Michael Cicchese ATA Senior Web Editor Organizers of Hay-Lift 2000 a drought-relief effort to aid feed-short farmers in Nebraska are looking for trucking companies willing to either donate, or offer at reduce rates, services in transporting hay from Pennsylvania to the Cornhusker state. Kyla Martin, coordinator for Hay-Lift 2000 Phase II, said she is looking for trucks that need a load coming back from Pennsylvania, and that can haul the donated hay for $1.25 a mile or less. "We would be even more elated to find anyone interested in donating a load back for us, but realize with today's fuel costs it is very hard to find anyone that can do that," Martin said. The Hay-Lift 2000 program was the idea of the Rev. Douglas Kelley, a Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania. A drought in Nebraska deeply cut the hay crop and the trickle-down impact on farmers and ranchers was the doubling of feed prices. After hearing about the crisis gripping Nebraska farmers, Kelley went to Pennsylvania hay farmers asking if they would donate portions of their abundant crop. Financial support also came via a grant from the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Along with that grant and the Pennsylvania farmers that came forward, three carriers, including ATA member Hunt Transportation, offered transport services at reduced rates. The other carriers were Sunrise Express and Don Hagan and Sons. From December to November 20 tractor-trailers were used in transporting hay that went to the aid of 74 cattle ranchers.

The cattle feed, from Pennsylvania farmers, is part of Phase 2 of Hay Lift 2000 to help area farmers make it through the winter. Lock has 36 head of cattle and said it should last 4-5 days on his farm. By Gretchen Fowler The Independent ST. PAUL Neither cold nor snow nor slick roads could keep Phase 2 of Hay Lift 2000 from reaching St. Paul's Howard County Fairgrounds Monday morning. Starting around 9 a.m., volunteers and drivers worked to unload four semis of hay donated to area ranchers while women from St. Paul's First Presbyterian Church prepared breakfast for everyone. Coordinated by the Rev. Dale Sallans from Central City's First Presbyterian Church and Bill Sisco from the Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Monday's drop provided 12 area ranchers with the gift of 11 bales each. Hay-Lift 2000 is a mission project started by the Rev. Douglas Kelly of the Presbyterian Church in Spring Run, Pa. The idea was for Pennsylvania ranchers to share their overabundance of hay with Nebraska ranchers who've run short due to last year's drought.

Editor's Note Bo Young Feature Section: The Word Return to Table of Contents In The Beginning Was The Word... This issue of White Crane is devoted to the idea of "The Word" which is to say, inspired writing as it relates to faith and spirituality for gay people... sometimes called "scripture." It might be argued that only the Torah, the Bible, the Koran, the Bhagivagita, the sutras to name a few, qualify as scripture. But there are people for whom Tom Spanbauer's The Man Who Fell In Love With the Moon or Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass were epiphanies to which they return again and again for solace, inspiration and guidance. What other use should there be for scripture? As is the wont of gay people as "in-betweens" we are far more inclined to look for and perceive similarities than disparities, connections over disconnects. We are equally inclined to find beauty and inspiration from the most unusual sources. Some spiritual paths, such as Native Americans have no written tradition to speak of, and yet their oral traditions, many of which are now being transcribed, inspire tens of thousands of individuals or more. Pictures painted on an animal hide preserve a history that is most often relayed orally, generation to generation, from the mouths of elders. Socrates suggested that language... the word... died in silenceor in the immutability of writing. For some of us, the standard texts have become like going to a dry well for water and we have turned to other sources for inspiration. Some have taken a closer look at those old forms and found new, sometimes alternate meaning and readings, like John Boswell's brilliant
