(Photo courtesy of Morris and Donnie Van Horn.) MARCUS TENNEY VAN HORN , son of John Calvin Van Horn, son of John C. Van Horne. Also son of Mary Frances Canfield, daughter of John Montgomery Canfield and Eleanor Johnson, was born on September 24, 1893 in Osawatomie, Miami County, Kansas, and died on November 19, 1980, in Quinton, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. Marcus Tenney Van Horn married Legal Tender Johnson-Foster on May 26, 1917, in Sapulpa, Creek County, Oklahoma. Children of Marcus Tenney Van Horn and Legal Tender Johnson-Foster are: 1. Nettie Foster 2. Jack Foster 3. March General Van Horn, b. March 18, 1918, d. March 28, 1999 4. Morris Elmo Van Horn 5. Charles Tenney Van Horn, b. February 11, 1923, d. June 9, 1991 *Marcus Tenney's father, John Calvin Van Horn, wanted to name the child "Bill" after William Oliver Van Horn, because Marcus looked so much like "Brother Bill." John Calvin called Marcus by the name, "Bill." *Marcus Tenney's sister, Pearl Margaret (I call her "Grandma Peggy", for she was my maternal grandmother) spent about six months writing in a little book all of the songs she could remember singing as a child with her brothers, first Marcus Tenney, and later, youngest brother, John Francis. One in particular she wrote down was written by Marcus Tenney, back when they were living in McAlester, Indian Territory. The year was probably about 1905 - 1906, and the two youngsters were not only impressed with Marcus' writing talents, but also with their own singing. They decided to take their act "on the road", and made their debut on the stage of the local movie theater in McAlester one Saturday afternoon. Shy, they were not! According to Grandma Peggy's recollections, they were received quite well. No tomatoes, no old shoes, and no BOOOOS or HISSES!
