In 1998, in honor of my 25th year of reading (I started late, at 18) I decided to make a list of the 100 books most dear to me, and even, boldly, foolishly, to rank them. Once committed to paper I wanted to change it a couple dozen more times, but, brave compilers must at some point call it accompli, and, voila, my top 100. You have to take my word for it that I did this BEFORE Modern Library put out their controversial list; I did it for a lark. Honest. It's an idiosyncratic list, admittedly, more passion, more personal preference than an attempt to cover books of historical significance. It's one man's favorite books, and, it goes without saying, a good place to start an argument. For instance, do I really think that William Steig's Dominic is a better book than, say, Catcher in the Rye ? Yes, I do. ULYSSES James Joyce

2. View from a Kitchen Sink
T After three months of life in a Naramata motel, a suitable 15-acre orchard came on the market, but Fred suggested to Percy that she might not want to live in the old house on the property. Percy remembers that the old house had a fabulous view from the window above the kitchen sink where she knew she would spend a lot of her time. The mixed orchard had pears, apples, peaches, cherries and apricots. Percy started painting almost as soon as she moved in, turning a chicken house into a studio. The youngest child was not at school yet. Percival Ritchie, Sage Brush , c. 1966,

In 1964, the Penticton Art Club sponsored an exhibition of twelve of Ritchie's paintings at the Jubilee Pavilion in Penticton, and a reviewer in the Penticton Herald noted the individuality of her approach and her versatility, while commenting on her ability to capture "the semi-desert contrasts of [the] region in a vivid striking panel." The following year, in another Pentiction

As a youth of 18, Ernest Hemingway was eager to fight in the Great War. Poor vision kept him out of the army, so he joined the ambulance corps instead and was sent to France. Then he transferred to Italy where he became the first American wounded in that country during World War I. Hemingway came out of the European battlefields with a medal for valor and a wealth of experience that he would, 10 years later, spin into literary gold with A Farewell to Arms I wanted to do something for him. You see, I didn't care about the other thing and he could have had it all. He could have had anything he wanted if I would have known. I would have married him or anything. I know all about it now. But then he wanted to go to war and I didn't know.

other. This session is devoted to a discussion of the complicated relationship between Faulkner and Hemingway as contemporaries, and their subsequent cultural and critical trajectories as American writers. The session welcomes a variety of approaches and premises for comparing the two figures, focussed primarily on the complex relationship between personal and literary reputation. Papers should offer a reasonable balance of biographical and textual analysis. Suggested subjects: the correspondence between the two men and their intermediaries; their critical estimations of each other and the degree to which these estimations reveal more about the estimator than the estimated; their inadvertent collaboration on To Have and Have Not

Deep in the intricate country of the mind
I took a twisting path that led me stumbling
To a wind-racked hill.
Those thickets, briary, tough to break
And swampy sometimes underfoot
Were well behind me now
Lost to sight and for the moment
Lost to mind. The hill I had reached was high enough To look on distances that dropped away fold upon fold Melting far to the Westward into a dim horizon They beckoned me. And my feet, so heavy as I had begun to climb the hill Were now uplifted to lighter pace, What land is this, I asked, in taking breath, What lies behind that seventh fold? About My Mommy : Stevi Foxx I decided to make my mother a webpage because she is one of the most interesting people I know. Stevi Foxx is the pseudonym she uses for writing, Foxx being her maiden name. Stevi is just a name she likes. This page has camouflage accents because she says camouflage is her 'favorite colour'. If you point out that camouflage is a pattern and not a colour, she says neon green is her favorite colour. She drives a station wagon painted camouflage with neon green 'trimmings' (windshield wiper arms, license plate frame, etc.). You know when you go out in public with her, there is a very good chance she will get you in trouble. At theatres she talks to the screen and throws JuJu's over her shoulder so the people behind her think someone behind them is throwing them.

AUTHOR GUIDES
Last Updated: Tuesday, 14-Jan-2003 13:40:26 CST

This directory is an index of indexes. It contains pointers to individual author guides or other cumulative documents that deal with specific writers. Admittedly, most of these authors are "literary." I have not included many authors from genres such as science fiction or romance. I think other sources do a better job of that than I can. As with everything on the Web, many of these guides are ephemeral; they disappear from the Web almost as soon as they appear. If you encounter a bad connection in this guide, please let me know about it. Another point: this page is NOT a catalog of every single text available on the net. Return to the Literature Webliography page and search the various text archives or use a web search engine for a more complete listing of titles available on the net.
