For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." Named for Patrick Henry
Patrick Henry [1736-1799] was a lawyer, orator and statesman. Henry was the first and sixth governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1774-76.
Established Seven Years after Illinois became a State
Formed from unorganized territory attached to Fulton County, Illinois on 13 Jan 1825. The original Henry County ran north to the border of Illinois and Wisconsin and included parts of present-day Carroll, Jo Daviess, Knox, Rock Island, and Whiteside counties. In 1827, the formation of Jo Daviess County drastically reduced the size of Henry County to about half its present day area. The present borders of Henry County were not established until 1836, and until about 1837, Henry County was attached to Knox County.
Part of the Military Tract of 1812
Approximately the southern half of Henry County was part of the land granted to veterans of the War of 1812.

Patrick Henry It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation? For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.

How Our Buildings Are Named BLAND - named for Richard Bland (1710-1776), political leader and member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and the First and Second Continental Congress, from Williamsburg CLARK - named for William Clark (1770-1838), explorer, from Caroline County, born into a Virginia plantation family, the youngest of six sons and brother of George Rogers Clark (1752-1818), the hero of the American Revolution in the West. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to make a western expedition to establish an American presence in the far northwest; to investigate a water passage to the Western Sea; to map and investigate the new Louisiana purchase; to report the culture, commerce, and capabilities of the many native-American tribes of the area; and to observe and collect botanical andbiological specimens. The survey was completed in 1806. DAVIS - named for Jefferson Davis (1808-1889), born in Kentucky and raised in Mississippi, he was President of the Confederate States of America. During the War with Mexico, he led his well disciplined command in a gallant and successful charge at Monterey, September 21, 1846, winning a victory in the battle of Fort Teneria. He later served as Senator from Mississippi and Secretary of War in the cabinet of Franklin Pierce. From 1774 to 1778 he was a member of the Continental Congress. He was also appointed to the committee to write the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson did most of the writing, but it was Adams who debated and challenged Congress to approve this Declaration.     Meet Amazing Virginians Patrick Henry Patrick Henry was born in Hanover County, Virginia on May 29, 1736 and raised on a tobacco plantation. As a young man, Henry attempted careers as a farmer and as a businessman before deciding to study law. Patrick Henry first gained widespread recognition in a case known as Parsons' Cause in which he successfully fought for the colonies' rights against the British King, George III. In 1765, Henry was first elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, the same year the Stamp Act was passed. He once again became a champion for the colonies as composer of a number of resolutions which established that only the colonies could infringe taxes upon themselves. In 1774, Patrick Henry represented Virginia at the First Continental Congress where his famous words were spoken: " I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!” He served in the Second Continental Congress, a total of 6 years as Governor of Virginia and as a member of the state legislature. He opposed ratification of the Constitution because he did not agree with the formation of a strong central government and became a leader in the creation of the Bill of Rights. Patrick Henry was married to Sarah Shelton and upon her death, married Dorothea Dandridge. He died on June 6, 1799, at Red Hill, his plantation home.

Henry was born on May 29, 1736, in Hanover County, Virginia, and was largely self-educated. From 1751 until 1760 he was first a storekeeper and then a farmer. Failing at both occupations, he undertook the study of law and in 1760 was admitted to the Virginia bar. "Radical," is a title that few men can wear with ease. The name Patrick Henry, during the revolution and for some time after, was synonymous with that word in the minds of colonists and Empire alike. Henry's reputation as a passionate and fiery orator exceeded even that of Samuel Adams. His Stamp Act Resolutions were, arguably, the first shot fired in the Revolutionary War.
    In 1764 he moved to Louisa county, Virginia, where, as a lawyer, he argued in defense of broad voting rights (suffrage) before the House of Burgesses.

    Early Years Patrick Henry's father was a Virginia surveyor and justice of the county court. Henry was largely self-educated, and was unsuccessful in several careers until he found his real calling: the law. He was admitted to the bar in 1760, and established a successful practice. In a 1763 trial, he startled listeners by claiming that people are born with certain unalienable rights. Revolution Henry became a leader of the Revolutionary movement in the South. In 1765, as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, he spoke out against the Stamp Act, claiming that the colonies had the right to legislate for themselves. He served on the Virginia Committee of Correspondence, which supported cooperation among the colonies, and was a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses. At the second Virginia Convention, in 1775, he urged the arming of the Virginia militia in preparation for war with Britain. It was there that he gave the famous speech quoted above. Henry also helped draft that State's first constitution. From 1776 to 1790, Henry served in the Virginia legislature and as governor, and he led the fight for the Religious Freedom Act of 1785. The Constitution Refusing to attend the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Henry led the fight against ratification in Virginia. He felt the Constitution did not protect the rights of the States or of individuals. He was instrumental, however, in getting the Bill of Rights added to the document, and then gave the Constitution his full support. Poor health prevented Henry from taking part in government until 1799, when he ran for the State legislature so he could oppose the states-rights Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions and promote American unity. He died before he could take office.
