BIOGRAPHY The son of a London goldsmith, Robert Herrick apprenticed to his uncle, also in the same trade, for six years between the ages of sixteen and twenty-two before entering Saint John's College, Cambridge. After graduating in 1617, Herrick was a protégé to Ben Jonson to whom he wrote five poems. Not just a poet, Herrick took holy orders in the Church of England in 1623 and served as vicar at Dean Prior in Devonshire until 1647 when, owing to his Royalist allegiances, he was removed during the Great Rebellion. That same year, Herrick published his first volume of verse Noble Numbers that was collected in his Herperides or the Works Both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick Esq . (1648). This major book of more than 1200 poems includes carpe diem love lyrics, epigrams, elegies, and epistles. From his studies of Horace, Catullus, and other authors of classical antiquity, Herrick adapted the conventions of the Roman pastoral tradition to the tradition of the English eclogue in order to celebrate British village life and customs. With the Restoration of Charles II, Herrick resumed his office of vicar at Dean Prior from 1662 until his death in 1674.

Robert Herrick (1591 — 1674)
The Argument Of His Book
I sing of brooks, of blossoms, birds, and bowers,
Of April, May, of June, and July flowers.
I sing of May-poles, hock-carts, wassails, wakes,
Of bridegrooms, brides, and of their bridal-cakes.
5 I write of youth, of love, and have access
By these to sing of cleanly wantonness.
I sing of dews, of rains, and piece by piece
Of balm, of oil, of spice, and ambergris.
I sing of Time's trans-shifting; and I write 10 How roses first came red, and lilies white. I write of groves, of twilights, and I sing The court of Mab, and of the fairy king. I write of Hell; I sing (and ever shall) Of Heaven, and hope to have it after all. Upon The Loss Of His Mistresses I have lost, and lately, these Many dainty mistresses: Stately Julia, prime of all; Sappho next, a principal; 5 Smooth Anthea, for a skin White, and heaven-like crystalline; Sweet Electra, and the choice Myrrha, for the lute, and voice; Next, Corinna, for her wit, 10 And the graceful use of it; With Perilla; all are gone;

Robert Herrick (1591 - 1674) To the virgins, to make much of Time Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying. The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a getting;
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting. That age is best, which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times, still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time;
And while ye may, go marry: For having lost but once your prime You may forever tarry. To Anthea, who may command him anything Bid me to live, and I will live Thy Protestant to be; Or bid me love, and I will give A loving heart to thee. A heart as soft, a heart as kind, A heart as sound and free, As in the whole world thou canst find, That heart I'll give to thee. Bid that heart stay, and it will stay, To honour thy decree: Or bid it languish quite away

BIOGRAPHY
Robert Herrick (1591–1674), the son of a well-to-do London goldsmith, was apprenticed to his uncle (also a goldsmith), studied at Cambridge University, and then lived for nine years in London, where he hobnobbed with a group of poets that included Ben Jonson. Under familial pressure to do something more worthwhile, Herrick became an Anglican priest. He was given the rural parish of Dean Prior, Devonshire, which he at first hated; there he quietly wrote poems about imagined mistresses and pagan rites (as in his well-known “Corinna’s Going A-Maying”) and deft but devout religious poems. When he returned to London in 1648, having been ejected from his pulpit by the Puritan revolution, he published his poetry in a volume with two titles, Hesperides for the secular poems and Noble Numbers for those with sacred subjects. Probably his most famous poem is the one included in this anthology, “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time,” a short lyric on the traditional carpe diem theme.

Representative Poetry On-line and the library at the University of Toronto provide twenty-three Herrick poems for their visitors’ delight.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in London, Herrick was apprenticed to his uncle, a goldsmith, for ten years until, at age twenty-two, he was sent to Cambridge University in recognition of his academic talents. Little is known of the decade following his graduation from Cambridge, although it seems certain that he associated with a circle of literary artists. In 1629, he was appointed vicar at Dean Prior, Devonshire—a rural parish that the sophisticated and cosmopolitan Herrick looked upon as a kind of exile. Yet, he was fascinated by the pagan elements of local songs and dances, and often drew upon pre-Christian writers for inspiration. His chief work, Hesperides (1648), is a collection of some twelve hundred poems—mostly written in Devonshire—about local scenery, customs, and people.

Robert Herrick
Robert Herrick was born in London in 1591. The son of a goldsmith, he was apprenticed to his uncle, also a goldsmith but went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge at the age of 22. He graduated in 1620 and took holy orders and commenced duties in a parish in Devon. As a Royalist he was forced to give up the parish in 1647. He was restored to it in 1662 and died in 1674. Herrick wrote on a number of themes. Often, and most famously, on the attributes of young women but also on rural life, religious themes and in his later life on his approaching death. Many of his poems also concern themselves with 'making much of time' or carpe diem, sieze the day as made famous in the film Dead Poet's Society. Here you will find a large selection of his work, including many of the poems to Julia and, importantly, his finest work: Corinna's Going a Maying.
