HESIOD
c.753 - c.680 BC
Greek Poet
Hesiod was the first major Greek poet after Homer and the first of mainland Greece whose works survived until today. The seriousness of Hesiod served as a counterpart to the more glamorous poetry of Homer. Two of his complete epics have survived, the 'Theogony' in which Hesiod tried to solve conflicting accounts of the Greek gods, and the 'Works and Days', describing peasant life.

Hesiod from Ascra was a famous poet in ancient Greece, living somewhen between 1000 and 700 B.C. His mentioning of the Pleiades and the Hyades is the first known documents related to these two open star clusters in Taurus. Hesiod is commemorated by the naming of Moon Crater Hesiodus (29.4S, 16.3W, 42.0, named 1935), Mercury crater Hesiod (58.5S, 35.0W, 107.0 km, in 1976) as well as asteroid (8550) Hesiodos (discovered August 12, 1994 on La Silla by E.W.

Hesiod maps - When the map name begins with the string `hesiod.' lookups are made using the "Hesiod" name server. The string following the dot is used as a name qualifier and is prepended with the key being located. The entire string is then resolved in the `automount' context. For example, if the the key is `jsp' and map name is `hesiod.homes' then "Hesiod" is asked to resolve `jsp.homes.automount'. Hesiod maps do not support cache mode `all' and, when caching is enabled, have a default cache mode of `inc' (*note Automount Filesystem::.). The following is an example of a "Hesiod" map entry: jsp.homes.automount HS TXT "rfs:=/home/charm;rhost:=charm;sublink:=jsp" njw.homes.automount HS TXT "rfs:=/home/dylan/dk2;rhost:=dylan;sublink:=njw"

The Theogony of Hesiod
Hugh G. Evelyn-White, tr. (1914)
(ll. 26-28) `Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things.' (ll. 29-35) So said the ready-voiced daughters of great Zeus, and they plucked and gave me a rod, a shoot of sturdy laurel, a marvellous thing, and breathed into me a divine voice to celebrate things that shall be and things there were aforetime; and they bade me sing of the race of the blessed gods that are eternally, but ever to sing of themselves both first and last. But why all this about oak or stone? (2) (ll. 104-115) Hail, children of Zeus! Grant lovely song and celebrate the holy race of the deathless gods who are for ever, those that were born of Earth and starry Heaven and gloomy Night and them that briny Sea did rear. Tell how at the first gods and earth came to be, and rivers, and the boundless sea with its raging swell, and the gleaming stars, and the wide heaven above, and the gods who were born of them, givers of good things, and how they divided their wealth, and how they shared their honours amongst them, and also how at the first they took many-folded Olympus. These things declare to me from the beginning, ye Muses who dwell in the house of Olympus, and tell me which of them first came to be. (ll. 139-146) And again, she bare the Cyclopes, overbearing in spirit, Brontes, and Steropes and stubborn-hearted Arges (6), who gave Zeus the thunder and made the thunderbolt: in all else they were like the gods, but one eye only was set in the midst of their fore-heads. And they were surnamed Cyclopes (Orb-eyed) because one orbed eye was set in their foreheads. Strength and might and craft were in their works.

Despite Hesiod's enormous influence in the ancient world, however, only two surviving works can be ascribed to him with certainty. The earlier of the two, the Theogony asteroeis "starry") associates him with the arching dome of the dark night sky itself, even though at this point in the narrative neither the stars nor any celestial bodies have yet been brought into existence. Hesiod later (375-83) completes the genealogy of the objects visible in the sky and describes the later descendants of Ouranos: the Sun (Helios), Moon (Selene) and Dawn (Eos), offspring of the Titans Theia and Hyperion, and the stars themselves, fathered with Eos by the aptly named Astraios. According to the poet the shining stars crown the sky and have as their sibling the planet Venus (Eosphoros, "bringer of dawn"), the only planet mentioned in Greek literature before the Classical Age.
Works and Days
Hesiod's marking of the risings and settings of a relatively few stars and star patterns nearby to one another also provided for an annual indication, lasting over a period of weeks, of the desirable periods for specific human activity. The Works and Days also reveals a knowledge of the solstices ("turnings of the sun"), and the poet mentions them three times: when the rising of Arcturus is said to occur sixty days after the winter same time of year (479-80); and when the sailing season is said to begin fifty days after the summer solstice (663-5). Hesiod, however, makes no specific mention of the equinoxes even though Pliny (

System information: Hesiod
With Kerberos installed and configured, a user can be authenticated and authorized for login on the console. Once authorized, however, the Linux system needs certain information, such as user id, home directory, and group memberships, which is usually stored in /etc/passwd . Under Ultrix and OSF1, the solution has been to update the password file whenever a user logs in. Under Linux, we'll use to always grab the information directly from the source.
What is Hesiod?
Part of MIT's original Project Athena , Hesiod is a network database built on top of DNS that can be used to store small text records of any kind. At Iowa State, it's used to store password and group entries, information about available network services, and pointers to AFS lockers.
Installing Hesiod
The support in glibc 2.1 will let us get to the password information that we need, but to get to other records, we'll need an additional Hesiod package. Preconfigured RPMs and SRPMs can be downloaded from ftp://aafugit.org/VINCENT/

Hesiod
S o this cat Hesiod wrote this book Theogony O ne of Hesiod's stories is about this girl, or Goddess, named Slimtoes, who had the misfortune to be spotted by Umeric, the God of Inadequate Self-Control, who being smitten with her great beauty began to persue her hither and yon in the shape of like a goat or something. Running away from Umeric, Slimtoes came to the bank of a river, in fact the same River that her father, the river god Not-terribly-bright, was the god of. She stopped at the bank of the river and raised her slim arms imploringly, asking her father for aid. As you might expect, the river god turned her into a tree of some kind, which saved her from the goaty attentions of Umeric, but was otherwise not particularly satisfactory. Apparently he didn't turn her back later on, either. This symbolizes the indifference of nature to human suffering. I n a related story, a human named Arachne, famous thoughout the tiny archipelago of Greece for her skill at looming, once boasted that she was a better loomer than the Goddess Athena (or somebody) herself. Rather than instantly destroying Arachne with a crossbow, Athena challenged her to a looming contest. Athena's loomation was marvelous and divine and all, as you'd expect; Arachne's was also incredibly skillful. But while Athena had loomed the splendors of the Gods, Arachne had loomed them as brawling bufoons, which was about right really, and so Athena turned Arachne into a spider so she could keep it up. Which is why spiders do that, presumably. This symbolizes poverty.

Theogony
From the Heliconian Muses let us begin to sing, who hold the great and holy mount of Helicon , and dance on soft feet about the deep-blue spring and the altar of the almighty son of Cronos, " [5] and, when they have washed their tender bodies in Permessus or in the Horse's Spring or Olmeius, make their fair, lovely dances upon highest Helicon and move with vigorous feet. Thence they arise and go abroad by night, " [10] veiled in thick mist, and utter their song with lovely voice, praising Zeus the aegis-holder, and queenly Hera of Argos who walks on golden sandals, and the daughter of Zeus the aegis-holder bright-eyed Athena , and Phoebus Apollo , and Artemis who delights in arrows, " [15] and Poseidon the earth holder who shakes the earth, and revered Themis , and quick-glancing Aphrodite , and Hebe with the crown of gold, and fair Dione Leto Iapetus , and Cronos the crafty counsellor, Eos, and great Helius, and bright Selene, Earth , too, and great Oceanus, and dark Night, and the holy race of all the other deathless ones that are for ever. And one day they taught Hesiod glorious song while he was shepherding his lambs under holy Helicon , and this word first the goddesses said to me " [25] the Muses of Olympus , daughters of Zeus who holds the aegis: ``Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things.''
