1877-1962 - Nobel Prize 1946
German novelist and poet
" I was born in Calw in the Black Forest on July 2, 1877. My father, a Baltic German, came from Estonia; my mother was the daughter of a Swabian and a French Swiss. My father's father was a doctor, my mother's father a missionary and Indologist. My father, too, had been a missionary in India for a short while, and my mother had spent several years of her youth in India and had done missionary work there.
My childhood in Calw was interrupted by several years of living in Basle (1880 - 86). My family had been composed of different nationalities; to this was now added the experience of growing up among two different peoples, in two countries with their different dialects.
Soon after I settled in Switzerland in 1912, the First World War broke out, and each year brought me more and more into conflict with German nationalism; ever since my first shy protests against mass suggestion and violence I have been exposed to continuous attacks and floods of abusive letters from Germany. The hatred of the official Germany, culminating under Hitler, was compensated for by the following I won among the young generation that thought in international and pacifist terms, by the friendship of Romain Rolland, which lasted until his death, as well as by the sympathy of men who thought like me even in countries as remote as India and Japan. In Germany I have been acknowledged again since the fall of Hitler, but my works, partly suppressed by the Nazis and partly destroyed by the war; have not yet been republished there.

Biography of Hermann Hesse (1877-1962)
Hermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany. The son of a former Pietist missionary, Hesse was expected to join the ministry and was sent to the Maulbronn seminary in 1892 to complete his education. Three short months after arriving in Maulbronn, Hesse began to suffer from chronic headaches and insomnia. He was promptly sent to the Pastor Christoph Blumhardt at Bad Boll to be cured. The treatment was not very effective, though, as Hesse's unrequited love for the pastor's daughter made him suicidal. He was then sent to a school for the mentally retarded and emotionally unstable for convalescence. After a few months, Hesse was released for good behavior and resumed his education at Cannstadt. At Cannstadt, though, Hesse began to drink, smoke, and incur heavy debts. In 1893, his formal education was at an end and his parents called him back to Calw. After helping his father in his publishing business, Hesse became an apprentice bookseller in Tubingen, a usual occupation for budding German authors. Hesse's time in Tubingen was characterized by obsessive reading and solitary contemplation. It was during this time in Tubingen that Hesse published his first poems, melancholy neo-Romantic lyrics expressing Hesse's uneasiness with the world. In 1899 Hesse moved to Basel where he worked again as a bookseller. He also did freelance journalism, which inspired his first novel, Peter Camenzind (1904; trans. 1961), the story of a dissolute writer trying to negotiate the difficult space between individualism and collectivism. This was followed by Beneath the Wheel (1906; trans. 1958), a semi-autobiographical novel recounting the story of a precocious youth pressured by overbearing parents and teachers.

Hermann Hesse GERM 2778/3778 Dr Ingo Cornils © Hardy Cole Hermann Hesse Today / Hermann Hesse Heute An international conference to be held at the Institute of Germanic Studies, London 27 - 29 November 2002 Objectives
  • to gain an overview of the life, works and impact of the German writer Hermann Hesse (1877-1962); to be able to explain the relationship between the growth and development of Hesse's oeuvre and the socio-political context to be familiar with three of Hesse's most influential texts to have an overview of the substantial secondary literature about Hesse to be able to effectively research and present a designated topic in class and in writing
Course decription "The difference between Marx and me? Apart from his much larger dimension, Marx thinks in terms of the masses, I in terms of the individual." Hermann Hesse, arguably the best-known German writer outside Germany, has always put the trials and struggles of the individual to make sense of his/her life first. He followed this quest for the self through all states of the psyche, through the excesses of despair, doubt, rebellion and lust. His prose (and poetry) is romantic yet unsentimental, experimental yet poetic, exotic yet familiar. His distinctive blend of creativity and contemplation is infused with the warm glow of serenity. This seminar course, taught and examined entirely in German, will start out with a general introduction to the German writer Hermann Hesse, the reception of his oeuvre at different times, and the main themes he addresses.

    The Journey to the East
    Nobel Prize Winners (1946)
    Author Info: Hermann Hesse
    (Translated by Hilda Rossner
If Herman Hesse had to hang his entire reputation on reeds as slender as this one, he'd be in big trouble. But Siddartha is a fine novel and he wrote the only truly great novel about the game M'Laba Laba ( Magister Ludi: The Glass Bead Game ), so we'll cut him some slack. This very brief novel consists of the report of a failed pilgrimage to the East by a group of men who belong to a mysterious League. In the course of relating their misadventures, the narrator realizes that the pilgrimage was part of a much larger effort to collect all of human knowledge in one place, that his version of events differs from that of others, that many great thinkers have also participated in this effort and finally, when he despairs of their ever succeeding, that he is being tested and has failed the test. But out of this despair he is able to grow in understanding. As he is told: ...despair is the result of each earnest attempt to go through life with virtue, justice and
