Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911)
"Mr. Higginson is a voluminous writer both in prose and verse, and has published several volumes. The sonnets I have selected are from The Afternoon Landscape , just published by Messrs. Longmans." ( Sharp Read a sonnet addressed to him by William Braithwaite.
The Snowing of the Pines
Softer than silence, stiller than still air,
Float down from high pine boughs the slender leaves.
The forest floor its annual boon receives
That comes like snowfall, tireless, tranquil, fair.
Gently they glide, gently they clothe the bare
Old rocks with grace. Their fall a mantle weaves
Of paler yellow than autumnal sheaves
Or those strange blossoms the witch-hazels wear.
Athwart long aisles the sunbeams pierce their way;
High up, the crows are gathering for the night;
The delicate needles fill the air; the jay
Takes through their golden mist his radiant flight;
They fall and fall, till at November's close
The snow-flakes drop as lightlysnows on snows.
The Baby Sorceress
My baby sits beneath the tall elm-trees

Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.

Where Liberty Is Not, There Is My Country
By Thomas Wentworth Higginson
Harper's Bazaar (Aug. 12, 1899). W hen the great French Revolution broke out, Thomas Paine felt an immediate wish to take a hand in it. His book "Common Sense" had probably done more than any other book to bring the American Revolution to a point, and his other publication, "The Crisis," to carry it safely through. He had retired with honor. Congress voted him $3000 for his services, and the State of New York gave him five hundred acres of land, but he was not content to live on these comforts when he could help the cause of freedom elsewhere. When his friends urged him to stay at home, and quoted to him the Latin motto, "Where liberty is, there is my country" ( ubi libertas ibi patria ), he said that this was a motto for a coward. The true motto for a brave man was, he said, "Where liberty is not , there is my country"; and so he went to Paris and took a hand in the French Revolution. When he opposed the killing of the king, he was shut up in the Bastille, and only escaped the guillotine because, when the doors of those prisoners ordered to execution for the next day were marked with chalk, it happened that his door was open and was marked on the wrong side, being afterwards closed again, so that he escaped. Thus he followed up his motto, "Where liberty is not , there is my country."

    THE TRUMPETER by: Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911)
      BLEW, I blew, the trumpet loudly sounding;
      I blew, I blew, the heart within me bounding;
      The world was fresh and fair, yet dark with wrong,
      And men stood forth to conquer at the song
      I blew! I blew! I blew!
      The field is won, the minstrels loud are crying,
      And all the world is peace, and I am dying.
      Yet this forgotten life was not in vain;
      Enough if I alone recall the strain,
      I blew! I blew! I blew!

    THE BABY SORCERESS by: Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911)
      Y baby sits beneath the tall elm-trees,
      A wreath of tangled ribbons in her hands;
      She twines and twists the many-coloured strands,
      A little sorceress, weaving destinies.
      Now the pure white she grasps; now naught can please
      But strips of crimson, lurid as the brands
      From passion's fires; or yellow, like the sands
      That lend soft netting to the azure seas.
      And so with sweet, incessant toil she fills
      A summer hour, still following fancies new,
      Till through my heart a sudden terror thrills
      Lest, as she weaves, her aimless choice prove true.
      Thank God! our Fates proceed not from our wills:
      The Power that spins the thread shall blend the hue.
    "The Baby Sorceress" is reprinted from American Sonnets . Ed. William Sharp. London: Walter Scott, 1889. MORE POEMS BY THOMAS WENTWORTH HIGGINSON RELATED LINKS
