    Harry Houdini (1874-1926)
Houdini's real name was Ehrich Weiss. He was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest. Although Houdini often claimed to be born in Appleton, Wisconsin, he actually came to the United States when he was four years old. To this day many connected with the small town of Appleton still claim that Houdini was born there. In later years, in a magazine interview, Houdini said about Appleton, "the greatest escape I ever made was when I left Appleton, Wisconsin." Houdini's father was Mayer Samuel Weiss. For a short time, he was Rabbi for the German Zoin Jewish Congregation in Appleton. His mother's name was Cecilia Steiner Weiss. His parents spoke only Yiddish, Hungarian, and German. The family was quite poor, so most of the children began to work at an early age. From the age of eight young Ehrich Weiss (Erik Weisz) sold newspapers and worked as a shoe shine boy. At the age of 12, young Ehrich left home to make his way in the world in an attempt to help support his family. Houdini began performing magic as a teenager, first calling himself Eric the Great. He read, as a teen ager in New York, "Revelations of a Spirit Meduim" by A. Medium, which exposed the tricks of phony psychics, who after being tied up would secretly release themselves to make ghostly things happen in darkened rooms. He also read "The Memoirs of Robert-Houdin," the autobiography of one of the greatest magicians of the day. Influenced by what he read and learned about the internationally known magician Robert Houdin, young Ehrich changed his name to Houdini, hoping to be in some way like his new found mentor.

ISBN 082341499X Spellbinder is the life story of Harry Houdini. It is filled with great pictures like old advertisements for some of his performances. There are also interesting facts that I never knew about Houdini like personal details about his bizarre relationships with his mother and wife. The best part about this book is the cool descriptions of some of the crazy trick that he performed occasionally it includes HOW he did them, too! If you need to read a biography, this one is a hit. The ART of ILLUSION Artwork by Carnegie Dante 1882-1955. Dante(Harry Jansen) toured with Thurston's # 2 Show. He toured mainly in Europe. Although he had the same props as Thurston, he had a personality and charisma all his own. He named his show Sim Sala Bim and from all accounts it was sensational. Many classic effects came from that show. "The Backstage with the Magician" was an effect that Dante performed and today you can see a version in Lance Burton's show. HARRY BLACKSTONE 1885-1965 He was born Harry Bouton. During his career Harry went through many name changes before he stumbled upon the perfect name of Blackstone. Dante and Blackstone performed during the same period though Blackstone's popularity would outlast that of his competitor. Cesareo Peleaz is the founder of the Le Grand David Magic Show in Beverly Mass. He plays a character called 'Marco the Magi' and along with a huge cast presents the longest running resident magic show in the world. The performance is similiar to the shows of Fu-Manchu and Okito but yet they've developed a style all their own. They have performances each Sunday at the Cabot Street Cinema Theatre, and a totally different show on occasional Saturdays at the Larcom Theatre.

I'm pleased to announce that this blog is moving to: http://circadianshift.net Although, the above link probably won't work for you while all the DNS servers play catch-up.
[12 March 2003 the DNS thingy seems to be kicking in, so the link should work for you; if not, there's always the alternate link below]
For those of you whose ISP is lagging, you can click this link to see the new site.
BTW, my apologies for the screwy archives here. That's just the way things happened.

    Russian Houdini Book
A peek inside a Russian Work on Houdini
    By Arthur Moses
The book translates into English as FROM ANCIENT MAGICIANS TO ILLUSIONISTS OF OUR DAY by authors Alexander A. Vadimov and Mark A. Trivas. The first Russian printing was in Moscow 1966 with 304 numbered pages which include text and photos. The second printing was also from Moscow in 1979 with text numbered from pages 5 through 271 and a photo section following renumbering pages beginning again from pages 3 through 62. A Czechoslovakian edition was printed in Bratislava, 1968 containing 368 numbered pages. The translated text as follows was taken from the second Russian edition. The book bestows upon us a brief over view of magic and magicians spanning everything from early Middle Eastern magic to medieval and Victorian magic to contemporary American, European, and Soviet Magicians. The work includes portrayals of those we easily recognize such as Houdin, the Herrmann's, the Davenport's, Dante, and Houdini among others. It even describes some early automatons. The text of the book follows: "Illusionists likewise were subject to the influence of this infectious enthusiasm. An American of Hungarian extraction Harry Houdini (Erikh Weiss, 1874-1926), friend of the author of Sherlock Holmes, emerged in this new detective genre. And although Conan Doyle was chairman of an English spiritual society and Houdini was clearly anti-spiritualist, having obtained the judicial punishment of more than 120 mediums, this didn't spoil their friendship.

    The World of Houdini

HOUDINI depicts life in New York City in the early twentieth century. To construct their sets, the filmmakers seem influenced by "How the Other Half Lives" by Jacob Riis. By the end of the 1880s photography was becoming cheaper, and Riis hit on the idea of using photography to draw attention to the conditions under which the poor in America-particularly the immigrants in New York City-were living. Examine the comparison between the Riis photograph and the sets created for HOUDINI.

    56. FairyTale - A True Story
18741926. Harry Houdini, the escape artist and illusionist whose name has enteredthe English language as a synonym for impossible escape, was born Erich Weiss
    http://www.fairytalemovie.com/houdini.html
Harry Houdini, the escape artist and illusionist whose name has entered the English language as a synonym for impossible escape, was born Erich Weiss in Budapest, Hungary on March 24, 1874. His parents were Orthodox Jews, his father a rabbi.
The family moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, near Milwaukee shortly after his birth. (Houdini later claimed to have been born there on April 6th, 1874.) He first became interested in magic at the age of nine when his father took him to see an English magician.
He first appeared professionally in 1882, as a trapeze artist and circus acrobat. He also apprenticed to a locksmith, and learned how to pick locks. In 1888 his family moved to New York City.
Aside from performing in theaters, Houdini did many of his most daring, seemingly impossible escapes in public venues, always attracting wide publicity. Such stunts as escaping from a strait jacket while suspended upside down, 75 feet off the ground, or emerging within 59 seconds after being tied up and sealed in a steel-bound packing case that was then lowered into the waters of New York Harbor, earned him world-wide fame.
Many of Houdini's escapes were genuinely dangerous. Once, in Chatham, England he escaped from the muzzle of a loaded cannon while a lit fuse burned. In Nova Scotia he was nearly killed while lashed to wild runaway horse. Near Dresden, Germany he was nearly run over by a speeding train while roped to the tracks.
