"It's a big honor, not just for me, but for the art of magic, which I love so much."
David Copperfield
(CBS) To be on a United States stamp, you have to have been dead for 10 years.
Luckily for David Copperfield, those rules don't apply to the stamps of Nevis, Grenada, Dominica and St. Vincent. They issued stamps Thursday honoring the illusion and three of his predecessors.
"It's a big honor, not just for me, but for the art of magic, which I love so much," he told CBSNews.com. "Magic has really never been honored on a piece of legal tender." Virtual Stamp Club Speaking in Grand Central Terminal's former waiting room. During an event at New York City's Grand Central Terminal, which was kicking off an anniversary celebration, Copperfield made water in a goblet disappear and appear, goldfish appear, and showed the standing-room audience how to perform simple tricks using rubber bands. Copperfield is appearing on stamps from all four of the Caribbean nations. Harry Houdini, Harry Kellar and Howard Thurston are on stamps from Grenada.

HOUDINI

EHRICH WEISS "HARRY HOUDINI" "...the most famous magician of all time..." Harry Houdini was born Ehrich Weiss on March 24, 1874 in Budapest. Although Houdini often claimed to be born in Appleton, Wisconsin, he actually came to the United States when he was four years old. Houdini's parents were Rev. Dr. Mayer Samuel Weiss (a Rabbi), and Cecilia Steiner Weiss. Much of their lives, and much of their seven childrens' lives, were spent impoverished. At the age of 12, Ehrich left home in an attempt to make his way in the world and to help support his family. He worked odd jobs, including those held at sweat shops. Ehrich's first appearance before an audienace was at the age of 14. "Ehrich, The Prince of the Air," performed as a contortionist and trapeze artist. Always interested in magic, the first book Houdini read on the subject was the "The Memoirs of Robert-Houdin," the autobiography of one of the greatest magicians of the day. Soon afterwards he learned that, in French, by adding the letter "i" to a word meant "like." It was at this point that Ehrich Weiss changed his name to Houdini, hoping that he would one day be "like Houdin," his new found mentor. His first magic shows consisted of sleight-of-hand tricks and other simple magic. He performed on his own and with his brother Theo (calling themselves the Houdini Brothers), at beer halls, amusement parks, as well as the Chicago World's Fair in 1893.

Houdini Photo and Key
After his death at the age of 52, on Halloween 1926, Houdini's wife Bess attempted to communicate with Houdini's spirit through mediums, using a secret code the couple had prearranged. Shown here with a framed photograph of him in chains is an "Authentic Key from the Personal Collection of the Great Harry Houdini." Stamped "CORBIN. PAT'D. 87.," the key has a provenance that traces back to Houdini through his brother the magician Hardeen, who inherited the collection of locks and keys at Houdini's death.

Spirit Trumpet and Slates
There were many trumpet tricks. If the medium's hands were not controlled (a practice intended to prevent trickery) he or she could simply move the trumpet about, a rubber tube being attached through which the medium spoke. Sometimes, a removable Psychic Mafia , Amherst, NY: Prometheus, 1997; and Walter Gibson, Secrets of Magic
To supposedly preclude trickery, the slates were often bound or even locked. But there were many means of circumventing the intended safeguards, ranging from substituting previously prepared slates to using specially gimmicked ones. (For a discussion, see Harry Houdini

Hungarian-born Erich Weiss gave himself the stage name Harry Houdini in tribute to the renowned French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. However, in 1908 Houdini renounced his respect for his idol when he published The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin many books on the subject of magic , often including instructions on how the most famous illusions are achieved. This was partly to discourage imitators of his work, and partly to avoid any suggestion that his fame was due to anything other than his own physical exertion and skill. Houdini died after a show in Detroit on Halloween night, 1926. He was finally killed by peritonitis, exacerbated by his refusal to cancel any shows on his intense touring itinerary. Before his death, Houdini had, with his beloved wife and stage assistant Bess (to whom he was married three times in separate ceremonies), developed a secret code which could be used to ensure that any message he sent to a medium after his death would be genuine, but none of those who claimed to be in contact with the magician could verify their assertions.

A ripped paper spells out a magical message! Magicana were full of inaccuracies that can be attributed to Houdini's continuing promotion of himself. For example, both the Anaconda Standard in Montana and The Sun in Philadelphia wrote, "Houdini, popularly supposed to be of Far Eastern birth was born in Wisconsin in 1874." Free Trick Secret of Siam Effect: You pick up a piece of paper and tear it into eight pieces and divide them into two piles of four pieces each. The spectator picks one pile and you the other. The spectators pile is held in his closed fist. You spread your four pieces out on the table, pick up a pen and write the letters S, I, A, M. a letter on each piece. You explain that when a magician uses the name of the mysterious land of Siam a ghost will leave a message. You then ask the spectator to open his hand. Mysteriously, when he does, he finds the four previously blank pieces in his hand now have a letter on each piece. When all the letters are assembled they spell out the message "It's Magic."
Preparation: On a rectangular piece of paper* write the four letters, C, T, G, I, on the left side of the paper as shown in the illustration. Write lightly so that the letter or number will not show through the other side of the paper. Place the paper face down on the table, the side with the four letters or numbers should be face down and to the left.

Separating two world wars, the 1920's followed events such as the sinking of the Titanic (1912), the invention of stainless steel (1913), and the completion of the Panama Canal (1914). The Roaring Twenties would have their own share of excitement and wonder as well - the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, penicillin was discovered, and the Sultan of Swat hit 60 home runs. These events were and still are significant, but they reflect only a small portion of the full story.
