March 24 ~  Magical Things Houdini: Master of Illusion "The u n i v e r s e is f u l l of magical things, patiently waiting for our w i t s to grow sharper." ~ Eden Phillpots A man full of magic Harry Houdini At first a card-trick performer, by 1900 Houdini developed an escape act. The 5'5" artist trained hard to develop stamina and dexterity until he was able to escape from any restraint chains, handcuffs, prison cells, padlocked underwater boxes. Anything. He became a star. A reviewer called him "probably the most mysterious and wonderful entertainer the world has ever seen." Self-confident with a flair for exaggeration, Houdini made things appear larger than life, creating things magical and teaching the amazing transforming power of the imagination . "I have tried through many sleepless nights to invent schemes to make an audience appreciate some worthy effort of mine." Of Houdini, contemporary illusionist David Copperfield said, "his message was that every obstacle could be overcome. The escapes were a metaphor that gave people hope ."

Harry Houdini
(1874 - 1926), magician.
Son of a rabbi, Houdini (real name: Erich Weiss) was born in Budapest, Hungary, but taken as a baby to the US where his father became rabbi of a congregation in Appleton, Wisconsin. As a boy, Houdini began to work as a trapeze artist, then as an illusionist. In 1900 his popularity became international when he packed London's Alhambra Theater night after night. Hailed as 'the world's greatest magician', he became the highest-paid performer in the entertainment world and his name became a synonym for a 'magician'. He founded the Society of American Magicians. Crowds thrilled at his many feats, which ranged from making an elephant disappear from the stage to releasing himself from a straitjacket while hanging 25 meters up in the air. In the Jewish community, he organized the Rabbis' Sons Theatrical Benevolent Association. Selected Bibliography: Harold KELLOCK: Houdini, his life-story

As Houdini, the famed magician, was shackled and then lowered into the water-filled Chinese Torture Cell, the audience, gazing through the glass front illusion at the immersed man (poster right), sat transfixed knowing that, unless escape was possible within precious minutes, certain death by drowning would result. In truth, there were two Houdinis, Harry Houdini, the performer as the world saw him, and Bro. Ehrich (Eric) Weiss, the man and Freemason, a personality obscured from view by the public persona. Born in Budapest on March 24, 1874, he accompanied his family to America. The reasons for the family's departure remain cloudy, although anti-Semitism undoubtedly played a major role. Harry Houdini was a complex personality, a romantic ever willing to embellish his rather mundane and plain beginnings. Throughout his life, there are clear instances where he invented and/or embellished events to enhance both his personal and professional image, having an incessant need to add color to events so that there might be an aura of mystery and glamour involved. With Hungarian friends in Appleton, Wisconsin, Houdini's father accepted a Rabbi's position there. Unfortunately, being an Old World conservative, he was unable to adapt to more liberal American ideas, and the family relocated, first to Milwaukee, and then to New York. The family was always in need of money, so young Eric took a variety of odd jobs to help out. With virtually no formal education, he left home at age 12 to make his fortune, but after a year or two, he relocated to New York where his family still lived.
