    Emerson Hough
    Writer
Emerson Hough roamed the wildest areas of the West and wrote about America's frontier. Hough, pronounced "Huff," was born in Newton, the son of Joseph Bond Hough, a teacher who had come from Virginia, and his wife, Elizabeth. Hough graduated from Newton High and taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. He was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, N.M., but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles. Register File Photo Emerson Hough, author of "The Covered Wagon," is seen driving a prairie schooner.
