The collapse of the bubble is the climax of the novel One of the best-selling fictional works of 1902. Emerson Hough (1857-1923) taught school before studying law at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1880. Hough was admitted to the bar in 1882 and practiced law at White Oaks, New Mexico, but found it had no appeal for him. He turned to a literary career by taking camping trips and writing about them for publication. His body of work eventually included 27 novels and hundreds of short stories and articles. Hough's early works included The Singing Mouse Stories , for children, in 1895 and the nonfiction The Story of the Cowboy in 1897. He had his first major success in 1902 with the novel

Title: The Story of the Outlaw
Author: Emerson Hough
Publisher: Cooper Square Press
Rating:
An engaging book on the REAL American West, not from the movies you have seen. The author (1857-1923) wrote other Western history and novels as well as being a friend to Sheriff Pat Garrett for material to be included here. Research that took a vast amount of time to gather that included many actual words of the bandits Hough was writing about! At 400 pages there is more than enough to sink your teeth into, and come away with a greater appreciation of what really the American West was actually like and the hardships that made everyday life a difficulty for most. Long Knives; A romance based loosely on the exploits of George Rogers Clark in the Kentucky and Illinois territories Long Knives focuses on Tom Harrod and his friends, Ike Todd, Sim Crane, and Hawk Camden, who join Clark in his history-making battles for control of the west. With the odds stacked against them, Clark and his men depend heavily on the elements of speed, surprise, and fear in conquering Kaskaskia and Vincennes and in making peace with the Indians. The four friends join Clark at Corn Island in the Ohio River before the march on Kaskaskia, and serve faithfully as scouts, hunters, envoys, and soldiers until the fate of the Illinois territory is secure. Eggleston devotes little energy to the development of his characters, choosing instead to go into great detail describing and interpreting actions and historic events. Hence, Long Knives becomes an action novel generously interspersed with tedious explanations of motives and alternatives. 27. ELLIS, EDWARD SYLVESTER, 1840-1916.

Jane Carrington, daughter of a Chicago millionaire, becomes dissatisfied with the limitations of Chicago society and decides to try life in the theatre. Success comes to her on the New York stage, bringing with it the problem of coping with her explosive temperament and moods. Only the first portion of Unquenched Fire is set in Chicago, and that portion does not hold the sparkle, the interest, or the insight which becomes apparent as the story progresses. North Entrance to Yellowstone Park. Photo by F. Jay Haynes The north entrance to Yellowstone, sometimes referred to as the "Roosevelt Arch," was dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in April, 1903 on his visit to Wyoming and Yellowstone. See photo of presidential arrival at Gardiner, MT to lower right. Officer to right of Roosevelt is Major John Pitcher who served at Park Superintendent from 1901 to 1907. Pres. Theodore Rooosevelt and Park Superintendent John Pitcher, 1903 As indicated elsewhere, John Colter reputedly was the first European American to see the wonders of Yellowstone. Other early trappers made it into the Yellowstone. In his 1895 work on Yellowstone National Park, Hirem M. Chittenden, an army engineer discussed below, reported the discovery of a tree with the initials "J.O.R. Aug 28, 1819." There is some indication that the ititials were that of a trapper by the name of Roche. Additionally, some evidence of early trappping activities by trappers for the Hudson's Bay Company has been found. Daniel T. Potts, after whom the Potts Hot Spring Basin on the shore of West Thumb Bay is named, described discovery of thermal activities in the Park as a part of the Ashley expedition of 1822. Jedediah S. Smith visited the area in 1826. Other early visitors included Joseph L. Meek and Osborne Russell. In her 1870 biography of Meek

39. State Capitol
The grandfather clock in the governor's office dates from about 1750 and oncewas owned by the prominent Iowa author Emerson Hough of Newton (18571923).
http://www.sos.state.ia.us/publications/redbook/profile/8-3.html
IOWA PROFILE photo courtesty of Iowa Division of Tourism STATE CAPITOL Location of the Capitol on its commanding site resulted from a series of decisions that began almost with statehood. The new state quickly recognized that the Capitol should be farther west than Iowa City, and the 1st General Assembly, in 1846, authorized a commission to select a location. Amidst rivalries, a Jasper County selection was made, and then rejected. In 1854, the 5th General Assembly decreed a location "within two miles of the Raccoon fork of the Des Moines River." The exact spot was chosen when Wilson Alexander Scott gave the state 9 ½ acres where the Capitol now stands. A group of Des Moines citizens built a temporary Capitol (which was later bought by the state) near where the Soldiers and Sailors monument now stands. In 1857, Governor James W. Grimes proclaimed Des Moines to be the capitol city, and state papers and functions were transported there. The temporary Capitol was in use for 30 years, until destroyed by fires; but in the meantime, the permanent Capitol was being planned and built. In 1870, the General Assembly established a Capitol commission to employ an architect, choose a plan for a building (not to cost more than $1,500,000), and to proceed with the work, but only by using funds available without increasing the tax rate.
