W. D. Howells produced many novels, stories, plays, and poems in his long life. He served as the editor of Atlantic Monthly and Harper's magazines, and as the "dean" of late 19th-century American literature introduced realism and naturalism, both by his own writings and by encouraging many others from Henry James to Bret Harte and Frank Norris to Mark Twain. He supported socialism and opposed American imperialism. Please visit the William Dean Howells Society web page and join the Society and the HOWELLS-L discussion list.

W. D. Howells
By Edward S. Martin Harper's Monthly Magazine, vol 141, pp 265-6, June-Nov 1920.] Illustrated by somber Howells portrait W HEN Mr. Howells died we who have been his readers might have said that we had lost a friend and entertainer never to be replaced. But we haven't lost him. He has merely stopped work. We have what he did in wonderful measure. If he had been a lawyer, a doctor, a teacher, a man of business, even a clergyman, there would be left his reputation, his descendants, his accumulated property, if there was any, and his touch upon the lives he influenced and helped, but the great body of his daily achievement would be gone. But because he was a writer the important mass of his work lives on, accessible and consoling, a long row of booksseventy-five, or thereaboutson library shelves all over the land and beyond the sea, and his spirit, his mind, the sound of his voice, the play of his thought and fancy in every one of them. His life So he learned in Ohio to write, and to get his writing into print, and also, in a way, to bring it to market. But, having got what training he could out of newspapers and political writings, he cut loose from them and set out boldly to be, not a newspaper man, but a man of letters. That was what it meant when he went to Cambridge and then to Venice. He could print his thoughts, but he needed better thoughts. Having learned well enough to start with what a writer most needs to know, he proceeded to add to knowledge.

Anti-Imperialist Writings by William Dean Howells
By Jim Zwick

D uring their lifetimes, Mark Twain and William Dean Howells (1837-1920) were closely linked when their anti-imperialist writings were considered. In a 1903 tract, The Principles of the Founders , Edwin D. Mead, the prominent Boston-based anti-imperialist, peace advocate, and cousin of Howells's wife, highlighted the two writers as representing literary anti-imperialism outside of Massachusetts. This was natural. Arguably the two most prominent and influential literary figures of their time, Howells and Twain were close friends, and they frequently discussed imperialism and the war in the Philippines in private talks and correspondence. Howells's association with the anti-imperialist movement began as early as April of 1898 when he joined Bolton Hall , Henry Codman Potter, Ernest H. Crosby Josephine Shaw Lowell and others in " A Peace Appeal to Labor " against the Spanish-American War. In October of the following year, stating that he was "heart and soul" with the organization, Howells joined Hall, Crosby

Opinions on "The White Man's Burden"
By William Dean Howells
Excerpt from "Opinions of W. D. Howells," New York Sun (April 30, 1899). M r. Howells expressed the deepest admiration for Mr. Kipling's work, but in speaking of "The White Man's Burden" he said: William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was one of the most prominent literary figures at the turn of the century. A Tolstoyan pacifist and an independent socialist, he opposed both the Spanish-American and Philippine-American wars, and from 1899-1920 served as an officer of various anti-imperialist organizations.

He was born to father William Cooper and mother Mary Dean Howells. William Dean Howells moved from town to town throughout his life. This however, did not effect his working capabilities. According to Edwin Cady, Howells could, "set type at six, was a useful hand at nine, and when he was eleven he could sext five thousand erns a day, a man's work" (The Road to Realism 25). During the year 1852, William Dean Howells' father published one of his son's poems in the Ohio State Journal, without his knowledge. Not much longer after that in 1853, Howells' first published fiction appears in the Ashabula Sentinel.

William Dean Howells by Solomon Davidoff Born March 1, 1837 in Martin's Ferry, Belmont County, Ohio, William Dean Howells was the second of William Cooper and Mary Dean Howells eight children. His heritage was Welsh, Dutch, German and Irish, leading him to remark on how that may have been why he felt so typically American. His father worked as an editor for various publications, including the 'Hamilton Intelligencer,' the 'Harrison Democrat' and the 'Retina,' as well as working as a toll collector on the Miami and Erie Canal. Howells went on to use his early experiences in Hamilton, where his family moved to in 1840, in his 1890 novel "A Boy's Town." His formal education was slight, taking place in small schoolhouses in southwest Ohio, until he was 12 years old. Most of what he learned was from reading at home and working at his father's print shop. It was many years later that Howells and his contemporary Samuel Clemens compared their experiences working as printer boys in the American frontier. Howells took his early experiences to heart again when he wrote "My Year in a Log Cabin," based on his experiences in Dayton, when his father was working on converting a gristmill to paper manufacture. Howells delivered papers in the mornings and set type at night. Later family moves took Howells to Ashtabula and Jefferson.

Howells, William Dean 1837-1920, American novelist, critic, and editor, b. Martins Ferry, Ohio. Both in his own novels and in his critical writing, Howells was a champion of realism in American literature. His education was gained by voracious reading as he worked for his father, a town printer in various small towns in Ohio. Howells early turned to writing and to editorial work on the Ohio State Journal (1856-61). He wrote a campaign biography of Lincoln in 1860 and was given an appointment as consul in Venice in 1861. The first of his many travel books, Venetian Life (1866) and Italian Journey (1867), brought recognition. After his return to the United States in 1865, he worked for various periodicals; he was associated with the Atlantic Monthly Harper's Magazine. His first novels, Their Wedding Journey The Lady of the Aroostook (1879), and others, were moralistic comedies of manners that aroused only mild interest. However, when he turned to realism with A Modern Instance (1882) and The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885), he became a leading novelist. In these two books, which are regarded as his major achievements, Howells portrayed with minute detail characters attempting to solve lifelike problems, often arising from social distinctions. Selected Short Stories of William Dean Howells

His stories, often in surprisingly comic and fresh ways, explore the slippery nature of perception, the variance between the ethical and the aesthetic points of view, the benefits and hazards of the creative imagination, and the requirements and responsibilities of personal morality.
Conversely, the early stories are invaluable in revealing his development as a writer and his concern, even at an early age, with themes that permeate the entire Howells canon.
Taken as a group, this carefully edited selection of short stories provides a complete and manageable overview of the artistic and moral concerns of William Dean Howells and the span and evolution of his contribution to this genre.
Ruth Bardon , who was educated at Swarthmore College, the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, now lives in Durham, North Carolina.

    William Dean Howells (1837-1920)
    Commentary by Karen Bernardo
William Dean Howells, more often remembered as a critic than a writer, is typically associated with the realist movement in literature, in which a significant amount of emphasis was placed on portraying events accurately. In fact, Howells himself defined good writing realistic writing as “the truthful treatment of material.” Yet this definition, seemingly simple on the surface, becomes puzzling when we look at Howells’ fiction, which is scarcely as gritty and in-your-face as today’s readers might expect.
What Howells seems to have meant by truth was in fact pragmatism, a philosophy that tests the validity of all concepts by their practical results. If it worked, it was true. If it was verifiable and repeatable, it was true. Realism, then, was the language of industry, of the Protestant work ethic, of solid, concrete, common sense. The goal of the realist was the recording of life as it really appeared. This, Howells felt, would make realism the literary language of democracy and the common man.
Yet when we compare two of Howells’ best-known stories, "Editha" and "Christmas Every Day," we may feel we are comparing an antiwar tract with a fantasy, and neither seems to fulfill our expectations of realism. "Editha" is about a young woman whose boyfriend has died in battle, and who sees not the loss and waste but only the glory because, of course, she was not there. "Christmas Every Day" is an amusing little tale, ostensibly aimed at children, about the havoc that would ensue if we actually did observe Christmas three hundred and sixty five days a year; it is a treatise on excess.
