click This history of a house that had been was told in the shade, one summer's day, by Nicandro, that old man to whom we all loved to listen, since he could remember and properly narrate the life of every person he had known in his native place, near to the lake of Chascomus, on the southern pampas of Buenos Ayres. CHAPTER I As a small boy, from the time when I was able, at the age of about six years, to climb on to a pony and ride, I knew this tree. It was then what it is now; five men with their arms stretched to their utmost length could hardly encircle it. And the house stood there, where you see a bed of nettles - a long, low house, built of bricks, when there were few brick houses in this district, with a thatched roof. W.H. HUDSON'S (1841-1922). Hudson, William Henry 1841-1922, English author and naturalist, b. Buenos Aires of American parents. He spent his childhood on the pampas but developed a heart condition and finally emigrated to England in 1870. Hudson was a sensitive observer of nature, particularly of birds. In his books he describes plants and animals in a highly personal manner with great force and beauty. His best-known work, Green Mansions (1904), is a romance set in a South American jungle. Included among his other works are The Purple Land The Naturalist in La Plata A Shepherd's Life Far Away and Long Ago (1918), and A Hind in Richmond Park See Amy D. Ronner, W. H. Hudson: The Man, the Novelist, the Naturalist (1986); bibliography by G. F. Wilson (1922, repr. 1968).

    Birds in Town and Village
W.H. Hudson London, 1906 . About the middle of last May, after a rough and cold period, there came a spell of brilliant weather, reviving in me the old spring feeling, the passion for wild nature, the desire for the companionship of birds; and I betook myself to St. James's Park for the sake of such satisfaction as may be had from watching and feeding the fowls, wild and semi-wild, found gathered at that favored spot. I replied that that was not strange, since it is impossible for us not to love whatever is lovely, and of all living things birds were made most beautiful.

We owe justice to men, and graciousness and benignity to other creatures ... there is a certain commerce and mutual obligation betwixt them and us.
