WH.Hudson (18411922). Calm in quietude is not real calm; when you canbe calm in the midst of activity, this is the true state of nature.

Quotes For Gardeners
Evil
Vice, Sin, Impropriety, Sarcasm, Satire,
Contra-Gardening, Sadness
Compiled by Michael P. Garofalo
From the Spirit of Gardening Website
I have a strong antipathy to everything connected with gardens, gardening and
gardeners. ... Gardening seems to me a kind of admission of defeat. ... Man
was made for better things than pruning his rose trees. The state of mind of
the confirmed gardener seems to me as reprehensible as that of the confirmed
alcoholic. Both have capitulated to the world.
Both have become lotus eaters and drifters.
- Colin Wilson, A Book of Gardens, 1963 When confronted with two evils, a man will always choose the most attractive.
- Anonymous The garden is like a spoiled beauty. There is no limit to its demands for admiration. It is new not only each spring, but each month, almost each day of the year. You may be required to find something fresh to say about it at least twenty-five times in one season, something which usually turns out to be grossly ignorant and unsatisfactory. - Scribner's Magazine (July 1915) The older one grows, the more one likes indecency.

Bear in mind that the children of life are the children of joy; that the lower animals are only unhappy when made so by man; that man alone of all the creatures, has "found out many inventions", the chief of which appears to be the art of mankind himself miserable, and of seeing all Nature stained with that dark and hateful colour.
~~W.H.Hudson (1841-1922) ... there is nevertheless a certain respect, a general duty to humanity, not only to beasts that have life and sense, but even to trees and plants. We owe justice to men, and graciousness and benignity to other creatures ... there is a certain commerce and mutual obligation betwixt them and us.
~~Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)

Her first book The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and the sequel Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) were later reworked into Bed-Knob and Broomstick (1957), the basis for the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks , starring Angela Lansbury. In 1952 the first of the books in the Borrowers series, The Borrowers was published to great critical acclaim. It won the Carnegie Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Book, and was named an ALA Distinguished Book. This was followed by The Borrowers Afield The Borrowers Afloat The Borrowers Aloft Poor Stainless: A New Story About the Borrowers (1971), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982), which includes Poor Stainless . The last title sees the borrowers safe and sound in a new home, the Old Rectory, coincidentally one of Mary Norton's last postal addresses. The Borrowers has appeared as a series on British television, and has been recently made into a Hollywood movie. Another, non-series title, Are All the Giants Dead?

About Us How To Contact Us What's New Site Search ... We Buy Comics Rima The Jungle Girl I never cared much for the "jungle heroes" genre that has been so popular throughout comic book history. The genre of which Tarzan is no doubt the best known exponent, but which also includes The Phantom and to some extent Gold Key's Turok (isn't it great not to have to say "Valiant's Turok"?), is far from appealing to me, unless some prehistoric creatures enter the story (which is a sub-genre for another time!). Tarzan, Korak and all their distant and not so distant relatives never really grabbed me as a young reader. They fought some white hunters or prospectors, some mean medicine doctor or the occasional berserker bull, alligator or elephant. This was no competition for Lee and Kirby 's cosmic epics in Fantastic Four , or the fights against Doc Ock that Spider-Man was waging. More often than not, even the adventures of Rawhide Kid or Kid Colt were more appealing than the repetitive mishaps of The Lord of the Jungle. One big exception is the sub-genre of the "jungle girl". My first introduction to this group of titles was Marvel's movie adaptation of
