The Purple Land
W. H. Hudson
With a new introduction by Ilan Stavans
ILLUSTRATED BY KEITH HENDERSON
The Americas
"Of living writers that I have read, W. H. Hudson is the rarest spirit."
First published in 1885, The Purple Land was the first novel of William Henry Hudson, author of Green Mansions . The Anglo-Argentine naturalist distinguished himself both as one of the finest craftsmen of prose in English literature and as a thinker on ecological matters far ahead of his time. The Purple Land is the exuberant, often wryly comic, first-person account of a young Englishman's imprudent adventures, set against a background of political strife in nineteenth-century Uruguay. Eloping with an Argentine girl, young Richard Lamb makes an implacable enemy of his teenage bride's father. Leaving her behind, he goes ignorantly forth into the interior of the country to seek his fortune and is eventually imprisoned and persecuted by the vengeful father. His narrative closes as he sets off on still another impetuous quest. This facsimile of the 1904 Three Sirens Press edition includes striking woodcuts by Keith Henderson illustrating the characters in the novel and the fauna of Uruguay. Ilan Stavans's introduction offers an opportunity to revisit

Is there a man among us who on running through a list of his friends, is unable to say that there is one among them who is a perfect pig? W.H. Hudson The wretched, bloody, and usurping boar, That spoil'd your summer fields and fruitful vines, Swills your warm blood like wash, and makes his trough In your embowell'd bosoms, this foul swine Lies now even in the centre of this isle, Near to the town of Leicester, as we learn From Tamworth thither is but one day's march. You can stretch right out on this one, and enjoy a wooden pillow, while you listen to the birds, and the murmur of the breeze. A piece of equipment upon which to recline, gaze upward through the flickering mosaic of leaves, into the infinite sky, and dream dreams of impossible things. " The blue sky, the brown soil beneath, the grass, the trees, the animals, the wind, and rain, and stars are never strange to me; for I am in and of and am one with them; and my flesh and the soil are one, and the heat in my blood and in the sunshine are one, and the winds and the tempests and my passions are one. I feel the ' strangeness ' only with regard to my fellow men, especially in towns, where they exist in conditions unnatural to me, but congenial to them.... ".

BUTLER-SAVANNAH CEMETERY, Part 1
TOWN OF SAVANNAH, WAYNE COUNTY, NY
Located on the Savannah-Butler Road, one mile south of Butler. Savannah Township, Wayne County.
This article was in the files of the former Butler Town Historian, Howard Williams, written in 1970. "From 1840 to 1878, the administration of the South Butler and Savannah Burying Ground Society was performed by a board of three trustees with a secretary and treasurer. This last office was vested in one man. There was no one specified as what we would now know as a superintendent. The minutes show that Hosea POTTER was appointed to act as sexton in 1852, and the following two years, one Henry GRAWBERGER held that post, and after that there is no further mention of a sexton or any one specific groundskeeper until after the reorganization in 1878. The first election of officers resulted as follows: Clarendon CAMPBELL, Thomas WEST and John DRATT for trustees, and S.C. POMEROY as secretary and treasurer. Other trustees following were George CANDEE, L.H. DEAN, Onias HOPKINS, O.P. PALMER, Dudley BRANDT, Gideon ALBRIGHT, John WEATHERWAX, Insley DOUGLASS, Moses TREAT, William MERRITT, William VAN DYNE, David R. HAMILTON, Dr. Mortimer F. SWEETING, H.K. GRAVES, Francis MCGUIRE, and David TAYLOR. During the reformation of 1878, a specified man, termed a superintendent of the cemetery was required by law. Those who have held that post since are as follows:
A.B. MAYNARD 1878-1884

Biographical Sketch
Dorothy Eugenie Brett, born in 1883, was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Viscount Esher, Reginald Baliol Brett, and his wife Eleanor. Besides Dorothy, called "Doll" by her family, there were two older brothers, Oliver and Maurice, and a younger sister, Sylvia. The children were raised in a restrictive manner similar to other children of the Victorian era. They saw little of their parents, being largely left in the charge of a nanny and other servants. Once the boys were sent to school, a governess was retained for the girls. However, she was dismissed after a short time and the girls' education was left to their mother. The girls lived a fairly secluded life into their early twenties. Aside from dancing classes with the royal children at nearby Windsor Castle, under the supervision of no less than Queen Victoria, their contact with young people their own age was practically nonexistent. One friendship that they did make was with Margaret Brook, Ranee of Sarawak, a friendship disapproved of by the Brett parents. Over ten years Dorothy formed an emotional attachment to the Ranee, and Sylvia attracted the attention of the Ranee's son, whom she later married against the wishes of her parents. The parents put an end to Dorothy's visits to the Ranee when she was 23, sending her off to their summer home in Scotland. There, an old friend of the family saw some of Dorothy's drawings and persuaded her parents that she should attend the Slade School of Art.
