Hughes, John Ceiriog 1832-87, Welsh lyric poet. By restoring simplicity of diction and emotional sincerity, he did for Welsh poetry what Wordsworth and Coleridge did for English poetry. Many of his songs were written to folk airs.

  • 25. Fund Raising
II’ – was organised, by popular demand, July 25. The two treks, whichwere led by Bryn Hughes, Ceiriog Holidays, raised over £200.
    http://www.cvag.campaign.btinternet.co.uk/fund_raising.htm
Ceiriog Valley people have put their money where their hearts are. Almost £2,000 has been raised to run the ‘No turbines’ campaign, most of it in the form of donations by those who attended the two public meetings at the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall, Dolywern on June 26th and July 3rd.
The four main fundraising events we have staged have collectively raised £547.80 - an excellent effort which says much about public opinion against turbines in the Ceiriog Valley. Sincere thanks to all who either took part or contributed.
The fundraising is continuing, as we hope will your fantastic support.
The lucky winners of the water colour are Jack and Agnes Roberts! The draw for the water colour was taken in the Golden Pheasant following the Wrexham Council meeting on 9th September. Well done to Jack and Agnes - a well deserved reward for your support and commitment to the campaign. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets - raising the grand sum of £665 for campaign funds.
    Win a water colour painting!
Tregeiriog professional artist Colin Radcliffe has painted a watercolour of a classic Ceiriog Valley view - featuring Pontfadog church and school. The picture, measuring 21" x 15" framed, is being raffled at £5 per strip of 5 tickets. It is a superb painting – so please, buy a strip if you can.

    Valley community declares
    war on ‘giant turbines’ plan
RESIDENTS of one of North Wales’ most spectacularly beautiful valleys have declared war against the proposers of a wind turbine development who want to erect the biggest turbines in the country on the hills above Glyn Ceiriog. A public meeting called to formally establish the Ceiriog Valley Action Group and elect its officers drew a packed audience to the Oliver Jones Memorial Hall, Dolywern, last night – and even though the meeting had not been intended as a public debate, Valley people voiced the passionate resolve that wind turbines will have no place in the Ceiriog Valley. Only 50 or 60 people had been expected to attend the CVAG launch meeting – but around 175 residents from Glyn Ceiriog, Pontfadog, Dolywern, Pandy, Tregeiriog, Llanarmon Duffryn Ceiriog and surrounding villages turned out – in advance of a full-scale public meeting at the same venue next Wednesday (July 3). They heard newly-elected CVAG Chairman Kyran Lawford tear holes in the application by farmer Gareth Roberts, backed by National Wind Power

    27. Ceiriog Country Holidays
Should you require any additional information, or have particular queries, contact Bryn Hughes. Ceiriog Country Holidays. Dolydd, Pontfadog
    http://www.chirk.com/country.html
Custom made Holidays designed around your own choice of accommodation and country pursuits. Ceiriog Country Holidays are set in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley, located just over the Welsh border, a valley which retains its own traditions, culture and lifestyle. Described as 'a piece of heaven thats fallen to earth' by Lloyd George, the area has remained relatively undiscovered - a secret hideaway - yet it is easily reached from the motorway network and A5, one of the main tourist routes into North Wales. Here is a valley just waiting to be explored with unrivalled countryside, excellent range of accommodation, great variety of pursuits and attractions, and a warm and friendly welcome. The variety of scenery encountered along the eighteen mile length of the valley is amazing. Rising in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains, the River Ceiriog wends its way through heath and moorland, wooded hills and rocky outcrops, lush pastures and gentle slopes, with brooks and streams adding to its flow. Situated on its banks as it journeys downstream are the picturesque villages and hamlets of Llanarmon, Tregeiriog, Pandy, Glyn Ceiriog, Dolywern, Pontfadog and finally Chirk. This is the gateway to the valley, where the river passes beneath Thomas Telford's impressive aqueduct (and viaduct alongside) before meeting the River Dee. Nearby, the imposing Marcher fortress of Chirk Castle overlooks the mouth of the valley and the ancient boundary of Offa's Dyke.

THE EGLWYSEG AND CEIRIOG VALLEYS LLANGOLLEN
    THE EGLWYSEG VALLEY

The valley itself is now peaceful and quiet, in contrast to the 19th century, when lead, slate and copper mining were major industries. Boasting some of the oldest buildings in the area, the valley provides a scenic backdrop to a number of walks.
The Nant Eglwyseg (Eglwyseg Stream) runs down through the valley, past the historical ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey, to join the River Dee THE CEIRIOG VALLEY
Lloyd George said of the Ceiriog Valley "A little bit of heaven on Earth". Boasting the majestic Pistyll Rhaeadr, the highest waterfall in Wales and England, in a valley leading off it, the Ceiriog valley remains today still relatively undiscovered.
With the proud fortress of Chirk Castle standing at the entrance, the Ceiriog Valley runs parallel to and immediately south of the Vale of Llangollen. With an industrial history of mining, the Ceiriog Valley was also home to three noteable Welsh poets - Huw Morus (1622-1709), Rev. Robert Ellis (1812-1875) and John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887). John Ceiriog Hughes, known simply as Ceiriog, was renowned as the "Robert Burns of Wales".
