Poetry in motion
A valley walk to die for, amid an undiscovered glory. No wonder the Ceiriog Valley gave rise to an oasis of Welsh poets. Howard Gudgeon waxes lyrical on a brand-new walk for all-comers The days of chancing upon an unspoilt corner of British countryside within reach of civilisation are fast diminishing. Yet just a drop-kick from the main drag into North Wales lies the border town of Chirk - the garden gate to a valley just begging to be explored. Tucked away nicely out of earshot and out of sight of the A5, Chirk sits midway between Shrewsbury and Chester, just yards over the English-Welsh border. It is here where the River Ceiriog ends its joyous journey - a journey through 22 miles of heather-clad moorland, swaying wooded hills, defiant rocky glens, lush pastures and gentle slopes. Throughout the valley, the landscape is alive to the grazing of sheep and cattle aside trout-filled waters, and to the cries of soaring buzzards who spy this truly wondrous and unrivalled landscape from on high. But the River's amazing voyage of discovery commences some 1,800ft up in the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains, overlooked by the magnificently peaceful summits, where the golden silence rivals the romance and your breath is snatched by more than just the thin air. From here it's onwards, making haste down-valley, welcoming myriad streams and brooks along the way, awakening the picturesque villages and hamlets of Llanarmon, Tregeiriog, Pandy, Glyn Ceiriog, Dolywern and Pontfadog with a rush of nature in full flow.

Rhan 1: Y Waun i Fetws y Coed Y tro yma, dim teithio o'r gogledd i'r de fyddwn ni fel ar yr A470. Na, ffordd sy'n croesi Gogledd Cymru o'r dwyrain i'r gorllewin ydy'r A5. Roedd hon yn ffordd bwysig a phrysur iawn ar un adeg - hon oedd y ffordd oedd yn cario pobol a'r post ar y goets fawr o Lundain (London) i Gaergybi (Holyhead). Mae'r A5 yn croesi'r ffin o Loegr i Gymru ym mhentre'r Waun (Chirk). Yma mae castell 700 oed - un o gestyll Edward I. Mae'r castell wedi bod yn gartref i'r teulu Myddleton er 1595 pan brynodd Thomas Myddleton y lle. Yn 1614 roedd Thomas Myddleton yn Arglwydd Faer Llundain ac yn 1630 talodd am gyhoeddi'r Beibl Bach Cymraeg. O'r Waun, gallwch chi deithio i'r gorllewin ac i fyny dyffryn hardd Afon Ceiriog ar y B4500. Dyma lle cafodd y bardd John Ceiriog Hughes ei eni yn 1832. Mae olion chwareli a hen dramffordd yn y dyffryn. Ond mae'r A5 yn troi i'r gogledd nes cyrraedd Afon Dyfrdwy (Dee), yna mae'n troi tua'r gorllewin ac yn teithio i fyny'r dyffryn i Froncysyllte. Dyma'r lle i weld Pontcysyllte - pont ddwr enwog Thomas Telford, sy'n cario camlas Llangollen ar draws y dyffryn.
