A Brief History of Wales by Peter N. Williams Ph.D. 1-Introduction 2-In The Beginning 3-A Sense of Wales ... 32-Conclusion
Chapter 16 : The Struggle and the Dream Continue
One who was particularly offended by the government report on the status of Welsh education was Sir Hugh Owen, a pioneer in education in Wales. His open letter to the Welsh people in 1843 urged the acceptance of the schools of the British and Foreign Schools Society, and his untiring efforts to secure a university for Wales eventually led to a commission to promote the idea in 1854. As his pleas to the government for financial help went unheeded, the university itself was established mainly through voluntary contributions.
It was public subscription that brought to fruition the ancient dream of Owain Glyndwr, revived by such as R. J. Derfel, and promoted by Sir Hugh Owen. In 1872 Aberystwyth University accepted its first students in an impressive, but vacant hotel on the seafront. It was to attract many that would come to have profound influence on the culture and consciousness of the Welsh nation. In so many areas it provided the foundations for the national revival of the late 1890's.

Hughes, Howard Robard Hughes, Howard Robard, , U.S.. business executive, b. Houston. As a young man he inherited (1925) the patent rights to an oil tool drill, which, manufactured by the Hughes Tool Company, formed the basis of his financial empire. His interest in aviation led to the formation of the Hughes Aircraft Corp. in the 1930s, which later became a major U.S. defense contractor. A pilot himself, he set a number of airplane records, including a world record (1935) of 352 mi (566 km) per hr in a plane of his own design. Hughes's interests in the 1920s and 30s also extended to the motion picture industry, and among the films that he produced were such classics as Hell's Angels and The Front Page. Through his parent concern, the Hughes Tool Company, he gained a controlling interest in Trans World Airways (TWA); when he divested himself of his TWA stock in 1966, he received $546.5 million. In the 1960s he purchased a number of gambling casinos in Las Vegas. A billionaire, he became a recluse in later years. His vast business interests involved him in extensive litigation. Vandals target village museum
The stained glass represents three local poets Vandals have broken into a museum, believed to be one of the oldest in Wales, and caused hundreds of pounds of damage. Fire extinguishers and solid oak floors were damaged in the raid at Ceiriog Memorial Institute in Glyn Ceiriog near Chirk. Trustees are trying to raise £300,000 to renovate the museum which was built in 1911. The majority of artefacts are in safekeeping at Wrexham library. Treasurer Frank Jones said the money that would now have to be spent on repairs was earmarked for use elsewhere. "We haven't got the money to spend on this sort of thing because we need every penny we've got to refurbish the Institute," he said. Frank Jones: The museum needs redeveloping "They broke in and they let off all the fire extinguishers - you can still see the white on the back of the stage.
