BG JAMES WHITE FRIERSON HUGHES
Kansas' 22nd Adjutant General
April 1, 1905 - April 1, 1909
Mayor of Potwin
Mayor of Topeka
Chief of Police - Topeka
Topeka is a poorer city today because Colonel J.W.F. Hughes no longer walks its streets. He was born in Tennessee, but lived in Topeka from 1881 till his death in 1945, a period of 64 years. He was a college graduate, very intelligent, friendly, kindly, very original, vigorous in his defense of the right and of the underprivileged, extremely courageous, the essence of politeness and courtesy, a gracious host and a man of many accomplishments and talents. Colonel Hughes had a deep-seated love of city, county, state and nation. His patriotism was of the highest degree as is shown by his membership in the armed forces for most of his adult life.
It was a consequence of his refusal, as commander of the Kansas National Guard, to obey an illegal order to eject members of the Kansas Legislature from their hall ( please see related link: Colonel Hughes and the Legislative War ), issued to him by Governor Lorenzo D. Lewelling in February of 1893, that Hughes became a national figure over night. He was court-martialed and dishonorably discharged, but the next Governor called him back to service and made him a Brigadier General.
Colonel Hughes was born at Columbia, Tennessee, January 12, 1860. He was the son of Judge and Mrs. A.M. Hughes. He had three brothers and two sisters. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1881 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He belonged to an honorary fraternity and also to an engineering fraternity, both Greek letter societies. He was married on October 6, 1885, to Miss Mary Adaline Clark, the daughter of Judge and Mrs. J. T. Clark of Topeka. To them three children were born: James C. Hughes, a retired U.S. Regular Army Colonel of Artillery of Long Beach, California; Mrs. Cecial W. Meredith, of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Juliet Newcomb, Los Angeles, California.

48. Elbrow Family History Nov 2000
Note Rugby School was the inspiration of the book ‘Tom Brown’s Schooldays‘ written by Thomas Hughes (18221896). The book was published in 1855 .
http://www.elborough.com/name.html
Elbrow / Elborough Family History July 2001 Origin of the surname Elborough/Elbrow The place Elborough was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. Geoffrey De Mowbray was said to have holdings at Cameley, Pitcott and Elborough in Somerset. He was Bishop of Coutances and was listed as being present at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Elborough is a small hamlet near to Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset. In the past little attention was paid to spelling, surnames for Parish Records were written by scribes who wrote names according to the pronunciation. Therefore, Elborough , Elborrow ,Elbrow , Elbra would often be the same family. The earliest members of the Elborough family recorded by Parish Records resided in the south of England in the counties of, Gloucestershire , Wiltshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire and also in the central of London. The earliest parish record for an Elborough marriage was recorded between Walter Elborough and Margaret in 1543 at Charlton Kings in Gloucester. The system of parish registration of baptisms, marriages and burials began in 1538 , so this is one of the oldest on record, few have survived to this day. There were members of the Elborough family living in the central of London at the time of the earliest Parish Records. The earliest marriage recorded on the IGI is A Walter Elborrow who married on June 22

WORLD OF THE CHILD
Stories: After 1850
The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books. Pictures and Stories from Uncle Tom's Cabin Uncle Tom's Cabin , one of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America." Thomas Hughes, 1822-1896.
