Hugo nació el 26 de febrero de 1802, en Besançon, y fue educado tanto con tutores particulares como en escuelas privadas de París. Era un niño precoz, que a muy corta edad decidió convertirse en escri- tor. En 1817 la Academia Francesa le premió un poe- ma y, cinco años más tarde, publicó su primer volumen de poemas, Odas y poesías diversas, que fue seguido por las novelas Han 'Islande (1823) y Bug-Jargal (1824), y por los poemas de Odas y baladas (1826). En el prefacio de su extenso drama histórico Cromwell (1827), Hugo plantea un llamamiento a la liberación de las restricciones que imponían las tradiciones del clasicismo. Este encendido llamamiento se convirtió muy pronto en el manifiesto del romanticismo. En effet, le 19°siècle a été marqué par la diversité de son oeuvre : romans , poésie lyrique , épique , satirique , drame en vers ou en prose... Il prend aussi une part active aux grands débats politiques. Victor Hugo est né à Besançon en 1802 ("ce siècle avait deux ans") d'un père lorrain , alors commandant , et qui deviendra plus tard général et comte d'empire, et d'une mère nantaise. C'est leur troisième fils , il est le cadet d'Abel et d'Eugène. De 1804 à 1807, il vit avec sa mère et ses frères à Paris, puis à Naples , et reviens à Paris en 1809. Ils firent ensuite un voyage en Espagne (1811-1812), dont l'enfant garda un souvenir ineffaçable . Cependant , il souffre beaucoup de la mésentente qui règne entre ses parents , et qui aboutit bientôt à une séparation.
