The Human Genome Project is an immense enterprise. The idea of sequencing the entire human genome was first proposed by biomedical researchers in the mid-1980s, only a few years after the Sanger method of sequencing DNA had been developed. Two organizations in the United States took up these proposals: the first organization was the Department of Energy, which was interested in finding out more about the damage caused to DNA by radiation. The second was the National Institutes of Health, which receives money from the US government to give to medical research projects. By October 1990, these two organizations had put together a plan to begin sequencing the human genome . Work in the United Kingdom focused initally on mapping the human genome but, in 1992, the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council agreed to fund sequencing on a larger scale. This led to the establishment of the Sanger Centre. last modified : Wed Aug 29 15:15:32 2001 webmaster@yourgenome.org

87. Origins Of The Human Genome Project
Origins of the Human Genome Project. Robert Mullan CookDeegan* Introduction. 9Charles DeLisi, The Human Genome Project, 76 Am. Scientist 488 (1988).

Origins of the Human Genome Project
Robert Mullan Cook-Deegan* Introduction The earliest and most obvious applications of genome research are tests for genetic disorders, but less obvious diagnostic uses may prove at least as important, such as forensic uses to establish identity (to determine paternity, to link suspects of physical evidence of rape or murder, or as a molecular "dog-tag" in the military). Genome research also promises to find genes expeditiously, making the genetic approach attractive as a first step in the study not only of complex diseases, but also of normal biological function. Each new gene is a potential target for drug development to fix it when broken, to shut it down, to attenuate or amplify its expression, or to change its product, usually a protein. Finding a gene gives investigators a molecular handle on problems that have proven intractable. Faith that the systematic analysis of DNA structure will prove to be a powerful research tool underlies the rationale behind the genome project. Faith that that scientific power will translate to products, jobs and wealth underlies the recent substantial investments in private genome research startup companies and the diversification of pharmaceutical and agricultural research firms into genome research. The human genome project was borne of technology, grew into a science bureaucracy in the U.S. and throughout the world and is now being transformed into a hybrid academic and commercial enterprise. The next phase of the project promises to veer more sharply toward commercial application, exploiting the rapidly growing body of knowledge about DNA structure to the pursuit of practical benefits.

96. From Darwin To The Human Genome Project
From Darwin to the Human Genome Project. This quest for the locationof human genes is referred to as the Human Genome Project (HGP).

Penni Carmosino ¥ California State University, Chico Index Previous Paper Next Paper From Darwin to the Human Genome Project
Since Darwin's publication of On the Origin of Species the world of biology has made many advances. These advances in biology, specifically in genetic research, would not have been possible without the use of the microscope. Improvements in the microscope lead to the ability to actually view reproductive processes, which eventually lead to genetic research. Upon the discovery of the structure of DNA the birth of the Human Genome Project occurred. Although the intentions of this project were to better society, capitalism and prejudice have twisted this project into something that our society is not prepared to deal with. This paper traces the evolutionary steps of genetic research from Darwin to Watson and Crick. Advancements made by the Human Genome Project will also be discussed in addition to problems that society faces as a result of genetic research.
Introduction
For the past few decades molecular scientists have been arduously working on a project that has the potential to revolutionize the world. The goal of this project is to determine the precise location and molecular details of all of the genes and interconnecting segments that make up the human chromosomes. This quest for the location of human genes is referred to as the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP is the most promising yet controversial undertaking ever attempted by the biological sciences.

100. High School Participation In The Human Genome Project

and enthusiasm. It takes an excited, informed teacher to turn out excited, informed students."
Sharon Masse, high school teacher
High School Human Genome Program
As a novel approach to the educational challenge posed by modern genetics, scientists from (MBT) and local high school teachers have developed a program that allows students to participate in sequencing small portions of the human genome: students sequence unsequenced DNA, and the results are placed in the appropriate national scientific databases. Students also discuss the ethical and social issues which arise from advances in the genome project. During a one-week summer institute held in the MBT teaching laboratory, teachers receive the training necessary to carry out the project in their classrooms. Equipment and technical support are provided during the school year. This program is funded by the Department of Energy. PROGRAM CHAIRS
