Selections from Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary
Study Questions from Essay I: "Of Commerce"
  • How does Hume justify the idea that commerce reconciles public and private interests?
  • What is the role of agriculture and of agricultural workers in Hume's characterization of economic history? What alternatives become available when agriculture produces a surplus capable of supporting many more people than those immediately employed in it?
  • Why does Hume believe that ancient rulers were capable of demanding great sacrifices from and of offering few pleasures to their subjects? Why is the situation supposedly different in Hume's own time?
  • Hume observes that it may seem as though the greatness of the nation and the happiness of its people are at odds: the more wealth is directed to individuals, the less is available for the purposes of the state. Moreover, the example of Sparta seems to prove this true. On what grounds does Hume argue that, in fact, Sparta is an exception to the general rule, which is that the power of the state and the happiness of its population go together?
  • How does this sentence inform Hume's thinking about commerce: "Every thing in the world is purchased by labour: and our passions are the only causes of labour" (160)? Compare Hume's views on the source of value with Locke's. By which passions does Hume suggest that people should be governed, and how do those relate to the spread of commerce?

http://www.trincoll.edu/depts/phil/philo/phils/hume.html
David Hume
Scottish Philosopher and Historian
Hume carried the empiricism of Locke and George Berkeley to the logical extreme of radical skepticism. He repudiated the possibility of certain knowledge, finding in the mind nothing but a series of sensations, and held that cause-and-effect in the natural world derives solely from the conjunction of two impressions. Hume's skepticism is also evident in his writings on religion, in which he rejected any rational or natural theology. Besides his chief work, A Treatise of Human Nature (1739-40), he wrote Political Discourses (1752), The Natural History of Religion (1755), and a History of England (1754-62) that was, despite errors of fact, the standard work for many years. Hume, David (1711-1776)
Author/s: Scottish philosopher who developed a philosophy of "mitigated skepticism," which remains a viable alternative to the systems of rationalism, empiricism, and idealism. If one was to judge a philosopher by a gauge of relevance-the quantity of issues and arguments raised by him that remain central to contemporary thought-David Hume would be rated among the most important figures in philosophy. Ironically, his philosophical writings went unnoticed during his lifetime, and the considerable fame he achieved derived from his work as an essayist and historian. Immanuel Kant's acknowledgment that Hume roused him from his "dogmatic slumbers" stimulated interest in Hume's thought. With respect to Hume's life there is no better source than the succinct autobiography
