Huxley, Thomas Henry (1825-1895) Britischer Biologe, der insbesondere durch seine Unterstützung der darwinschen Evolutionstheorie bekannt wurde. Huxley wurde am 4. Mai 1825 in Ealing geboren (damals zu Middlesex gehörend, heute ein Vorort von London) und am Charing Cross Hospital in London ausgebildet; 1845 bestand er die Magisterprüfung und wurde in das Royal College of Surgeons aufgenommen. Im folgenden Jahr trat er als Assistenzarzt des Forschungsschiffes Rattlesnake in die Royal Navy ein. Auf einer Schiffsfahrt nach Australien, die bis 1850 dauerte, wurde Huxley mit Meerestieren tropischer Oberflächengewässer vertraut. Seine Beobachtungen an Quallen führten ihn dazu, die zoologische Klasse Hydrozoa aufzustellen. Außerdem gelangte er zu der Erkenntnis, dass die zwei Schichten von Keimzellen, die in dieser Klasse gefunden werden, den Keimblättern ( Ektoderm und Entoderm ) früher embryonaler Stufen höherer Tiere homolog sind. Als Huxley 1850 nach England zurückgekehrt war, wurde er in die Royal Society aufgenommen. Offiziell gehörte Huxley bis 1853 der Royal Navy als Assistenzarzt an. Er nutzte diese Zeit, um mehrere wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen zu schreiben, wozu auch eine anerkannte Arbeit über den Körperbau
