Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) Nel periodo in cui tenne le "conferenze" era un insegnante con cattedra alla Royal School of Mines. L'impegno di Huxley a favore della gente meno abbienti era probabilmente dovuto anche alle sue umili origini. A differenza degli eminenti scienzati che avrebbe in seguito frequentato, Huxley non proveniva da una famiglia agiata. Da ragazzo aveva frequentato la scuola per soli due anni; un giovane meno dotato sarebbe potuto diventare un emarginato, ma non Thomas Henry: si fece autodidatta, e studiò scienza e logica, oltre ad imparare il tedesco da solo. A sedici anni era praticamente presso un medico, e a diciassette vinse una borsa di studio della Charing Cross School of Medicine di Londra. Intorno ai vent'anni pubblicò il suo primo articolo scentifico, che verteva sul pelo umano, nella "Medical Gazette". In quei giorni, il servizio nella marina britannica costituiva una via sperimentata per emergere nel mondo scentifico. Per i viaggi in lontani angoli del mondo solitamente si richiedevano ufficiali con preparazione scientifica che dovevano riportare informazioni sulla geologia, sulla flora e sulla fauna delle terre visitate. Un giovane naturalista che avesse l'opportunità di svolgere tale ruolo si trovava molto avvantaggiato rispetto ai suoi concorrenti. Sia Darwin che Hooker avevano acquisito influenza dopo viaggi del genere; era dunque naturale per Huxley che voleva seguire i loro passi, fare domanda per un posto in marina. Dopo aver completato gli studi medici, egli ricevette in effetti l'incarico di assistente chirurgo sulla fregata HMS Rattlesnake, e salpò per l'Australia. Il viaggio durò quattro anni.
