Records reviewed on this page: Janis Ian ...For All The Seasons Of Your Mind The Secret Life Of J. Eddy Fink Who Really Cares ... Hunger Unfortunately, Janis Ian is better known for a couple of fluke hit singles than for her mostly impressive body of work. Dig deeper into her catalog and you'll be rewarded with a batch of wry, piercing songs with clever arrangements and a disarmingly straightforward vocal delivery. Ian was a child prodigy, shooting to sudden fame at 15 with her self-penned "Society's Child," about a white girl who succumbs to pressure and stops dating a black boy. Though it hasn't aged well, it was controversial enough in 1967 to get her cursed and spat on, and it sailed up the charts. She rapidly matured as a singer and songwriter, but nobody paid much attention until the surprise mid-70's hit "At Seventeen" and the accompanying album Between The Lines established her as one of the preeminent soft-rock post-folkies. After several intriguing followups experienced sales problems, Ian took several years off from the business, moved to Nashville, made a reputation as a songwriter for others, came out as a lesbian, and started recording again (not necessarily all in that order). Luckily for us, her songwriting skills are intact, and her recent work seems more confident and relaxed. Her official site is back; there's also a very extensive

Janis Ian And Strange Angels To Entertain At "Mini-NARM"
Thirty years after she emerged as a child prodigy in a hippie world, Janis Ian is writing and singing songs as powerfully as ever. Her debut album for Windham Hill Records, Hunger, is a showcase for this talented composer-performer. She has found a way to translate her extraordinary gifts into every era of modern American popular song.
Strange Angels, Tribe Records, will be showcased on Saturday evening, September 13 Strange Angels features Kevin Fisher on lead vocals and guitar, with David James providing rich harmonies on vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, and violin. Peter Tornell on drums and Jeff Alan on bass round out the band. Altogether, Strange Angels offers a melodic experience with a powerhouse delivery. The singer-songwriter is still spinning, but at her own speed. By David Ryder Janis Ian reached the half-century mark this year and she's happy. "I wouldn't be anybody else," the singer-songwriter said from her home in Nashville. "I might want to be Beethoven for a week, but I'm pretty happy with my life. It's a good life. I'm 50 and I get to earn a living doing what I love. That's more than most people have." Ian wrote Roberta Flack's 1974 hit, "Jesse," then touched teenaged psyches with the poignant "At Seventeen." She even had an international disco hit, "Flying Too High," from the soundtrack of the movie Foxes , which starred Jodie Foster. Her latest album, God and the FBI , is her 17th and the second of a seven-record deal with Windham Hill. It includes "Memphis," a heartfelt duet with Willie Nelson, and the hilarious country music tribute "Boots Like Emmy Lou's." America was first introduced to Janis Ian by composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein on national television in 1967. Bernstein championed the unknown teenager's controversial "Society's Child," a plaintive song about interracial male/female relationships. Striking a resonant note in an era when such behavior could still get you killed, Ian had a Number One hit, as well as articles in Life Look Time and Newsweek , by the time she was 17.

Why this Grammy winner gives away her music
David Coursey,
Executive Editor, AnchorDesk
Friday, August 30, 2002
While the recording industry says free music downloads hurt record companies, some artists say that what's bad for the media behemoths of the world may be very good for them. One of those artists is singer/songwriter Janis Ian, who dropped by AnchorDesk Radio this week to talk about how free music helps her career. It's just a coincidence that Ian's visit coincided with the final death throes of Napster , the first and best known of the music-swapping sites. Napster crashed amid record industry lawsuits even after major label BMG took a big stake in the company, hoping to turn it into a music-for-pay site. DON'T EXPECT JANIS to shed any tears over Napster's demise. Ianwho has recorded more than 25 albums and is best known for the 1975 hit "At Seventeen"thinks file-sharing services like Napster, which make money by facilitating mass file-swapping, cross a line between fair use and something worse. She's got no problem with music-swapping sites per se, as long as the music they make available comes with the proper permissions attached. Such sites have already become an important venue for new artists to get exposure.

http://www.janisian.com/article-bluebird_auditions.html
AT THE BLUEBIRD AUDITIONS
Performing Songwriter, May 1996 Some of the people we'll see today have travelled from as far as Canada to be here. Many of them have only been in Nashville overnight, stealing time from their day jobs in the hope of being scheduled for the Bluebird Sunday Night Writer's Showcase. We're so backed up with applicants at this point that the soonest they'll take the stage here is six months from now. I've been helping to judge the auditions for about four years now, whenever my schedule and Amy's coincide. It's one of the things I enjoy most about being part of this community, albeit in a masochistic sort of way. Auditions are hard. I'm sure they're harder on the applicants than the judges, though I believe the main reason for that is that the applicants have bigger dreams, and more to lose. The judges, on the other hand, have to sit through their performances. All of them. Good and bad, boring and worse. I'm sure that for a first-time applicant hitting the Bluebird stage, seeing us lined up against the back wall resolutely trying to keep our opinions out of our faces, we are crushingly intimidating. We try not to be; we try to be innocuous and encouraging. The longer we sit, the harder it is to be either. Why are they here?

15. Janis Ian Articles
Alas, I don't know a single Performer who hasn't expressed concern recently over andphone calls from fans had changed drastically from Hi, is this Janis Ian?
http://www.janisian.com/article-number_one_fan.html
I'm Your # 1 Fan
Performing Songwriter, December 1994 "I'm your number one fan." Any performer who watched Kathy Bates utter those words in Misery shuddered at the scenario: A famous writer, trapped by a rabid fan whose only desire is to ensure that he stay with her forever. In the play and movie, she ties him to the bed, and eventually breaks portions of his legs to ensure his remaining there. Yikes! Alas, I don't know a single performer who hasn't expressed concern recently over the rapidly diminishing borderline between "over-zealous fans" and dangerous psychotics, who run the gamut from stalking to physical violence. It's a terrible truth that as the music industry has grown and become more important in the eyes of the media, our attractiveness to those who live their lives through obsessive fixations on "stars" has also increased. This used to be almost exclusively a Hollywood problem; the sheer magnitude of the silver screen guaranteed that movie stars would attract "nut cases". With the advent of Mark Chapman (John Lennon's assassin), as well as the current media focus on music and performers, it's become our problem, too. Nowadays it's routine for performers to buy homes under another name, keep a tour manager or bodyguard in a second bedroom adjoining theirs on the road, never answer the door alone, and see as few people backstage as possible "just in case". While this often feels like overkill, particularly to those of us coming from folk or jazz backgrounds where off-stage interaction with the audience is an important way of staying in touch, it is sadly necessary at certain points. And I think that part of our responsibility to ourselves is to be aware of those points in our careers, rather than taking for granted that everything will somehow mysteriously resolve itself.
