Ian's At 17 With Windham Hill Set - Singer/Songwriter Records Her Latest In Unusual Fashion (Billboard - 1157 words - February 19, 2000
BY CHARLES KAREL BOULEY II
Indeed, it has. It was her 1975 set "Between The Lines" that contained "At Seventeen"-her signature composition that also cemented her status as a respected singer/songwriter. With her newest effort, which will be issued by Windham Hill, Ian hopes that time is on her side-given the success of such Lilith Fair-era artists as Jewel and Sarah McLachlan. "I'm lucky the times have come back around to the importance of singers and songwriters," she says. "The reason I went with Windham Hill in the first place is they left me alone to record this unconventionally," Ian says. "I felt like the bunker thing was the right thing to do. We had two people in my age group and then two people in their early 30s. This was a way to force everybody to use their talents instead of taking the easy way out. We sat around and in the morning, and we drank coffee. In the evening, we drank single malt and just saw what happened." This hibernation presented challenges-but it was one Ian and producers/musicians Jim Cregan, Marc Moreau, and Philip Clark met head on. "It wouldn't have worked with any of my other records because we didn't have the kind of engineering and technological options we have now."

Folk legend Ian touring again 30 years after first hit By TIMOTHY FLYNN
Knight-Ridder Thirty years after her first hit - a song about interracial romance - landed on the charts, folk legend Janis Ian is touring again, in advance of a new record due soon, "Hunger on High Street." During a year when Ellen DeGeneres proclaimed her sexual orientation on her TV sitcom; when k.d. lang released an album called "Drag" (yeah, it's about smoking but, on another level, it's not); when Melissa Etheridge and her lesbian lover became parents of a baby girl; and when avowed bisexual Ani DiFranco (who performs on Ian's new record) became the exemplar of the savvy, powerful and independent recording artist, it seems appropriate to consider the career of Janis Ian, who long ago wrote about the pain of burying one's sexual identity. Ian, born Janis Eddy Fink in 1951, published her first song, "Hair Spun of Gold," in 1963. She was 12 years old. As a regular live performer in various New York folk clubs, Ian gained a reputation as a promising vocalist and a budding but still unpolished songwriter. By then she'd adopted her brother's first name as her surname.

Performing Songwriter, October 2001 Morning of the day before: Monday, September 10, 2001
We are arrived in San Diego after a half day's drive. Not bad, we've only done 800+ car miles these past 3 gigs. I'm excited; tomorrow is a full day off! Rare on the road, a day without show or travel. Next night I'll be joined by Judy Collins, Richie Havens, and Roger McGuinn for San Diego and the Anaheim Convention Center. We'll do our San Francisco dates, then fly home for a day. Can't believe it's all gone so smoothly. I flew Tina and Nancy out as their "thank you" for another year of doing my merchandise and website. They're getting their first taste of road life - "Day off? Oh boy - laundry!" Day 1: Tuesday, September 11
Was awakened by Tina at 7:30, telling me to turn on CNN. At first I thought I was watching previews for a new action film; the graphics were great, sure, but I picked up the phone to read her out for waking me early on a full day off. Then I saw the text below the film. Are they bombing New York? Who? Why?
My little crew and I gather in my room, wanting the company of friends. We are glued to the TV, imprinting those planes morphing through the World Trade Center. I keep flipping back to the first Kennedy assassination, the shock rolling through our sixth grade class. I worry for the crew, all substantially younger than I am. They've never been through a national crisis before.

Singer/songwriter Janis Ian comes to Chico for the first time By Alan Sheckter SHE LEARNED THE TRUTH AT 17 The first musical artist ever to perform on Saturday Night Live (for its first on-air episode), singer/songwriter and activist Janis Ian comes to Chico for an intimate solo performance at the Chico Women's Club.
Preview: Janis Ian, Chico Women's Club, Friday, Aug. 23, 8 p.m., Tickets: $16-$18 J anis Ian burst onto the music scene as a 16 year-old prodigy in 1967 with "Society's Child," and the Associated Press dubbed her "a white teenager indicting America for its racism and hypocrisy." In the 35 years since, she has been a singer, songwriter, activist and magazine columnist. Next Friday, courtesy of North Valley Productions, she'll visit Chico for the first time. Born Janis Eddy Fink, the singer/songwriter, who can arguably be grouped with a handful of old-wave singer/songwriting women that includes Phoebe Snow, Carole King and Laura Nyro, infuses different subtleties into her songs that set many moods. After the accolades and fame from her earliest work died down, Ian re-surfaced in the mid-'70s with three critically acclaimed records. The first one

After a life of struggle, doubt, and abuse, Janis Ian comes out on top with a new album, a world tour, and a thriving writing career and Melissa Etheridge does the amazing interview
From The Advocate, June 13, 1995
My first memory of Janis Ian is hearing “At Seventeen.” I was only 15, but to a kid who wanted much more than what I saw in Leavenworth, Kan., or in the mirror, the song rang true. I went out and bought Janis Ian’s Between the Lines and Aftertones on the same day. I remember sitting in my basement, listening to those albums over and over. As an aspiring singer-songwriter, I was always influenced by Janis. Her honesty and ability to deal with pain and self-consciousness were both inspirational and maybe a little daunting.
How could I know that just a few years later, in 1985, we would be working for the same music publisher and that I would actually meet Janis and be able to tell her how I felt about her music? When we finally talked we discovered we had more than a publisher in common. We were experiencing many of the same struggles as we tried to be true to ourselves and our sexuality in our music and our politics.
Janis began her career shockingly early, at the age of 14, with an interracial protest song, “Society’s Child,” that was so powerful it was banned on radio stations across the country. Thankfully, Leonard Bernstein recognized the song’s worth and invited Janis to sing it on a television special he was doing. She did, and her career was born.

In the 1960s, when the diminutive Janis Ian first strode into the spotlight and national attention at the tender age of 15, she took her first of many giant steps into forbidden terrain. Her hit song "Society's Child" was an artful creation that recounted the story of an interracial relationship. It was self-penned and arranged, and a hot potato for the music industry. Many were not prepared to change with the times, and this song hit like a dagger in the heart of a middle America forced to come to grips with race, gender, war, and sexuality. But the recording showed this young woman had precocious talent, both as a songwriter and a performer. "Society's Child" topped the charts and her 1967 debut album
