61. Stand By Your Woman

Stand by your woman
Breakdowns, massive debts, a failed marriage and anti-lesbian prejudice Janis Ian's life is like a Country song. Interview: Steve Gran t Janis Ian is one of those names in the hinterland of pop music. These days people mostly either say 'Janis Who?' or mutter on about a 1975 record called 'At Seventeen', a song of such brutal honesty that the singer-songwriter says, even now, she feels like she's 'stripping naked' everytime she intones those lines about loss of innocence and personal inadequacy. It won her a sole Grammy award she's been nominated seven times but perhaps because of its piercing honesty has never been recorded by anyone else. Ian's other writing, meanwhile, has been taken up by artists as varied as Cher, Bette Midler, Hugh Masekela, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Nanci Griffith, Mel Torme and Vanilla Fudge. Like most artistes who have known real fame, Ian has a sometimes over-inflated sense of herself; Oscar Wilde once said that the only thing worse than not getting what you want is getting it; he might have added that getting it aged 16 is the very worst, the age she was in 1967 when her first notable hit, 'Society's Child', catapulted her into the American spotlight. It was a song about an inter-racial love-match, still a sensitive subject in the civil-rights-active mid-'60s, especially when put over by a precocious schoolgirl. 'I don't think you're ever prepared for the consequences of making that kind of record... people spitting at you in the street, calling you "nigger-lover" on stage. Those were hard times for me.'

Concert Preview World Cafe, Warhol and WYEP team up for a weekend of diverse music Friday, June 23, 2000 By Molly Ball
Post-Gazette Staff Writer The friendly establishment you know as the World Cafe is now the World CyberCafe. The syndicated, Philadelphia-based radio show hasn't officially changed its name. But when host David Dye comes to the Andy Warhol Museum for the show's third annual Pittsburgh taping tonight and tomorrow, the performances and interviews will be Webcast live on the Internet sites of 65 public radio stations nationwide. Pittsburgh's WYEP 91.3 FM orchestrates the annual event, the brainchild of station manager Lee Ferraro. "I like to joke that I wanted to do a national broadcast to get my friends to move to Pittsburgh," Ferraro says. Since raising Pittsburgh's cultural profile is the basic idea behind the Warhol sessions, Ferraro hopes the Webcast will get the music out to even more listeners. This year, the show's Internet presence is audio only, but Ferraro says video could be added next year. The Webcast is especially good news for fans who've been turned away from the box office. The 500 tickets available for this year's taping sessions sold out in record time: two days. Everybody else can point his or her browser to wyep.org starting at noon.

While most women write tell-all books about the men they've had and/or known, Sherie Rene Scott has devoted an entire CD to them. Luckily for those men involved, Sherie has limited it to male songwriters whose shows she has been involved in (although her tongue-in-cheek liner notes hysterically imply otherwise). Her album, Men I've Had , features songs by Pete Townsend (whose show, Tommy , provided Sherie with her Broadway debut), Randy Newman ( Faust at La Jolla Playhouse), Kander and Ebb ( Over and Over at Signature Theater), Elton John ( Aida ), and Jonathan Larson ( Rent What is wonderful about the album (aside from Sherie's superb, sensual vocals, which are perfectly complimented by Tim Weil's understated arrangements) is that only one of the songs is from the shows mentioned. Instead, Sherie has wisely chosen songs from the writer's pop catalogues, and performed them in a moderately laid-back manner that sizzles and rocks and the same time. Highlights include an incredibly sensual "Squeezebox" (Pete Townsend); "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters (Elton John/Taupin), which makes her sound like a cross between Laura Nyro and Carole King; the sultry "This Life" (from Kander and Ebb's Over and Over Rent was not the nadir of his talents).

Parker Scott: Company of Strangers At: Don't Tell Mama
Reviewer: David Roberts for Theatre Reviews Limited [The comments from Parker Scott are from an interview that David Roberts had with the performer recently.]
At one point in his current show "Company of Strangers" at Don't Tell Mama, Parker Scott introduces his band in the following way: "Pretty boy on my left Carl Allocco, Pretty boy on my right Gerry Dieffenbach." It was at that moment that pretty boy Parker Scott redefined "boy band" for all time. Even more significantly, Parker staked a powerful claim on not only the lingua franca but on the human community's right to use the spoken and written word in the most opportune ways.
Claiming power and using power appropriately might be the real themes of Parker Scott's show. Each of the songs in the program focuses on some aspect of the human condition which makes us both somehow connected to one another and yet somehow estranged from one another, a "company of strangers." The resolution of this dichotomous state (if there is one) or, at least, the recognition of the bifurcation is most likely found somewhere on the non-conscious and/or spiritual level. This is the level Parker Scott and his band guide their audiences to in "Company of Strangers" and it is the level that has piqued Parker's interest of late. "I have recently gotten very interested in yoga and have begun taking classes. I find it an incredibly spiritual experience and it is really great just to get inside of yourself to learn and experience who you are and challenge your body, mind, and spirit."

Cathedral of St. Helena
One of America's most beloved string quartets returns to Helena with a lively concert in the Cathedral of St. Helena. The Ying Quartet-the only all-sibling ensemble in professional classical music today-believes in the relevance of great art music to everyday American culture. For this reason, they love to perform outside the usual venues: in shopping malls, barbershops, libraries, hospitals-wherever they can share the excitement, power and love of music with a community. They're a tight ensemble of virtuoso players, and we're pleased to welcome them back into our community. FEBRUARY Altan

No Irish traditional band in the last dozen years has had a wider impact on audience and music lovers throughout the world than Altan. With dynamic live performances that range from, the most sensitive and touching old Irish songs to hard-hitting reels and jigs, Altan have moved audiences from Donegal to Tokyo to Seattle - to Helena. Altan have always believed that Irish traditional music is modern music in every sense, and its growing influence and popularity have proved them right.

This exhibition focuses on a decade of colorful acrylic drawings, a rarely explored aspect of the work of the legendary Los Angeles sculptor Kenneth Price. In addition to being a celebrated ceramist, Price has been continuously involved with works on paper. While unknown to most, Price's drawings possess all of the sensuality, elegance and whimsy for which his three-dimensional forms have received decades of praise and recognition. The exhibition - the first museum investigation of the artist's drawings - is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue. SELFPORTRAIT.MAP: Lilla LoCurto/William Outcault

Power output (W)
Number of inputs for non-vinyl sources: Manufacturer:
Marantz Telephone: Price: Reviewed in issue: Marantz's 'SE' suffix indicates a model which has been enhanced to provide 'audiophile' quality at a still-affordable price. In fact, there was never a straight PM-66, but the PM-66SE is easily the tallest and most bulky of the five contenders here, though its front panel still offers only basic facilities. 'Source direct' claims to shorten the signal path by applying the juice directly to the volume control, bypassing the tape-monitor switch and balance control. The instructions suggest that the signal also bypasses a mono switch, but curiously there isn't one. You do get a headphone socket, though. Inputs are available for a record player (moving magnet only), three line sources and two tape decks. One of the latter supports off-tape monitoring, and there is a tape-dubbing feature thrown in for good measure. The amp can be plumbed into Marantz-branded systems using system-control sockets, which is when the supplied full-system handset comes into its own. It only works volume and muting on the amp. With a claimed 50 Watts available per channel, this amplifier allegedly has the top-quality internal components that the SE suffix implies, and Marantz reckons the layout of the '66SE's circuits has been optimised to give the best possible stereo imagery. Non-indicating push buttons can lead to some confusion about the operating status of the amp unless you look carefully, but this is a minor issue.

I grew up with Janis Ian. Not in the same neighborhood, but at the same time. I think maybe she's a year or two older than I am, but I vividly recall being mesmerized by her first LP (remember them?). She's another artist that is a talented performer whose songs have a lot to say. Her rise to fame and stardom was quite something to see, and I never dreamed that I would ever get to work with her. When I saw her name added to the schedule at IMAC I got quite excited. Of course I immediately signed up to do the show. As it turned out, it was fairly simple, just her and her guitar, and I got to mix both house and monitors for her. It was an honor and a privilege to be able to work with her.
