His early years were lonely and miserable. Distressed by the consequences of his family's financial ruin and on his own at sixteen, he first was apprenticed to an apothecary. Not long after this he began writing poetry, and in 1850 he published his first play, Catilina, a tragedy in verse. In 1851 he began an extended apprenticeship in the theater, first as stage manager and playwright with the National Stage in Bergen and in 1857 as theater director for the Norwegian Theater in Oslo. His early plays for the most part went unrecognized or were greeted with opposition and critical hostility. As a man far in advance of his times, Ibsen was condemned for unveiling truths which society preferred to keep hidden. In 1864, dissatisfied with the backwardness of Norway, he went to Italy. He wrote the bulk of his drama there and in Germany. His career can be divided into three periods. The first phase, that of poetic dramas, dealt primarily with historical themes, folklore, and romantic pageantry. His name was established with the publication of

Henrik Johan Ibsen, a short biography HENRIK IBSEN YEAR BY YEAR Henrik Ibsen was born in the Stockmann house in Skien. Both parents came from leading local families. His father, Knud Ibsen, came from a line of affluent skippers and traders. His mother, Marichen Altenburg, came from Skien's aristocracy. Knud Ibsen bought his mother-in-law's house, the Altenburg house, with ten rooms and kitchen, and this became the family home. He also bought her distillery at Lundetangen, which was in need of extensive modernisation. Henrik Ibsen was Confirmed in Gjerpen church. The family moved to Snipetorp in Skien centre. Resignation. Catiline. He made him the subject of his first play, but in Ibsen's play Catiline is defeated. A friend, the law student Ole Schulerud, took the manuscript with him to the capital and tried to find a publisher for it. Henrik Johan Ibsen Biography Ibsen home Bibliography Annotated Online Index Writing Assignments Henrik Ibsen was born on 20 March 1828 in Skien, Norway. He lived in Kristiana (now Oslo), or Skien, or Grimstadt, Norway. In 1836 his father, who had been prosperous up until that time, went bankrupt, in that culture and at that time a disgrace profound enough to affect him and his children for the rest of their lives. Henrik Ibsen left his unhappy home when he was 15 and moved to Grimstad, about 70 miles away. He studied for admission to the university, worked as an apothecary's apprentice, and wrote his first play. During this "dues-paying," nationalistic phase of his career, Ibsen married Suzannah Thoreson in 1858 and cofounded The Norwegian Company , an organ for Norwegian art and culture. His last play for the Norwegian Theatre, the 1863 The Pretenders , finally achieved what he had been trying to do, but the company was bankrupt, and at the time it seemed to him that he had failed as playwright and director. In fact, free from the requirements of writing nationalist drama for people who cared mostly for profit and Norwegian traditions and who seemed capable only of what he later called "small-mindedness," he was able to find his own voice and express his own vision. He left Norway in April 1864 to live abroad, in Italy and Germany, and he did not return to Norway until about 1891, 27 years later. Ibsen's voice and method crystallized in the 1879 A Doll's House and the 1881 Ghosts . These plays scandalized people who expected happy endings and people who thought art should not address issues they didn't want to think about.

Henrik Ibsen Henrik Johan Ibsen (born 1828, Skien, Norway, died 1906, Oslo) was an extremely influential Norwegian playwright who was largely responsible for the decline of the Victorian drama and the rise of the Modern. His plays were considered scandalous in much of society at the time, when Victorian values of family life and propriety were still very much the norm, and any challenge to them considered immoral and outrageous. Ibsen's work examined the realities that lay behind many a facade, which the society of the time did not want to see. In a very real way, Ibsen created the modern stage, by introducing a critical eye and free inquiry into the conditions of life and issues of morality. Prior to him, plays were expected to be moral dramas with noble protagonists pitted against darker forces. Every drama was expected to result in a "proper" conclusion, meaning that goodness was to bring happiness, and immorality only pain. Ibsen was to turn that concept on its head, challenging the beliefs of the times and shattering the illusions of his audiences. He was born into a relatively well-to-do family in the small port town of Skien, which was primarily noted for shipping timber. Shortly after his birth, however, his family's fortunes took a significant turn for the worse. His mother turned to religion for solace, while his father declined into a severe depression. The characters in his plays often mirror his parents, and his themes often deal with issues of financial difficulty.
