John Cabot , authorized by Henry VII of England, makes the first recorded landfall on the North American continent since the Norse. Return to top of page
Gaspar Corte-Real , with two ships, reaches Newfoundland and Labrador (formerly Newfoundland). The next year, with three ships, he explores the Labrador coast. Two of the ships return to Lisbon, but Corte-Real's ship is never seen again.
Miguel Corte-Real , Gaspar's brother, sails towards Newfoundland and Labrador (formerly Newfoundland) with three ships. He and his ship fail to show up at their appointed rendezvous. Another expedition sent out the following year to find the crew returned without any clues of their whereabouts.
Thomas Aubert , a French explorer, sails to the New World in in 1506.
Sebastian Cabot , in two ships, claims that he has made a voyage in search of the Northwest Passage. New evidence suggests that his vessels reached Labrador and entered Hudson Bay.

Newfoundland Wills "J"
The information on these pages came from the "Newfoundland Wills Index" microfilm. Each entry was hand written. I had particular trouble reading middle initials, for example the difference between F and T. An asterisk indicates an entry that was difficult to read and therefore the accuracy is suspect. There are mistakes on these pages so look for typos. Do not treat the data presented here as a primary source of information for your research. I-J INCHES Died 1st February 1852, James Nairne Inches, aged 49 years. IRELAND Died 14th January 1852, Theodoria Ireland, aged 40 years. IRELAND On February 24, 1890, at his residence, Panmure, George Edward Ireland , aged 55 years. IRELAND Died 28th August 1916, David Henry Ireland, husband of Elizabeth Ireland, and youngest son of the late William Ireland, of Point England, West Tamaki, aged 62 years. IRELAND Our citizens on Monday heard with surprise and regret of the death of Mr George E. Ireland , partner in the firm of Messrs Ireland Brothers, tanners and curriers, who expired at his residence, Panmure, that morning. Mr Ireland was a businessman of close on thirty years standing in this community, but took little part in public affairs. He had been ailing for some months past, Dr Davy being in attendance upon him. Mr Ireland arrived in Auckland in 1862, from Lincolnshire, with his brother, and for some years they carried on business as tanners and leather workers in Mechanic's Bay, afterwards removing their establishment to the Panmure lagoon. At that township for the past fifteen years or so Mr Ireland has resided, superintending the tannery operations. Some years ago he and Mrs Ireland, made a tour to the mother country, principally for the benefit of his health. Mr Ireland leaves a widow but no family. (1890) IRVINE Died 9th June 1848
