J ane Campion's film adaptation of The Portrait of a Lady has rekindled public interest in the lapidary, demanding novels of Henry James (1843-1916). This April 15th, on the 154th anniversary of James's birth, we've gathered together writing by and about James that has appeared over the years in The Atlantic Monthly From the time that James's first published short story appeared in The Atlantic "The Story of a Year" , March, 1865), William Dean Howells and subsequent Atlantic editors championed James's literary talents. This support was critical for James, as his difficult fiction demanded more attention of readers than the popular illustrated periodicals of the day were willing to court. Several of James's novels were serialized in The Atlantic including The Portrait of a Lady the first installment of which appeared in November, 1880. After Portrait appeared in book form The Atlantic gave it a glowing review James has continued to fascinate The Atlantic 's readers, writers, and editors. In "Henry James as Landlord" (August 1946), Louise Boit shares letters she received from James while renting Lamb House, his English home in Sussex. The letters show James as the best sort of landlord: full of good cheer and generous with both his household and his friendship. In

Dennis Barlow: Through no wish of my own I have become the protagonist of a Jamesian
problem. Do you ever read any Henry James, Mr. Schultz? Mr. Schultz: You know I don't have the time for reading. Barlow: You don't have to read very much of him. All his stories are about the same
thingAmerican innocence and European experience. Schultz: Thinks he can outsmart us, does he? Barlow: James was the innocent American. Schultz: Well, I've no time for guys running down their own folks. -Evelyn Waugh The Loved One )(see Orrin's review There is no more disheartening experience in all of reading than to finish a page of a Henry James novel and turn to the next, only to be confronted by the massive paragraphs lined up ahead of you like enormous blocks of granite. Completing one of his books is truly a task worthy of Sisyphus. Pretty good, no? You can just imagine the movie, with a script by Raymond Chandler, based on a James M. Cain story and directed by John Huston or Alfred Hitchcock; Barbara Stanwyck plays Milly Theale, of course.

HENRY JAMES
"I am that queer monster, the artist, an obstinate finality, an inexhaustible sensibility." Birthplace

New York, US
Education
He was laxly educated by private tutors while he travelled with his family around Europe; attended Harvard law school but dropped his studies to concentrate on writing.
Did you know?
James's sexuality has been much discussed; he explained his celibacy by saying that "to be led to the marriage bed is to be dead".
Critical verdict He was the first to address the clash between old world and new, the theme of the American in Europe. His use of finely withheld detail and psychological ambiguity has had a great influence on twentieth-century fiction, while the enigma of his sexuality has assured plentiful analysis.

James, Henry (1843-1916) Amerikanischer Schriftsteller, geboren in New York , gestorben in Chelsea (England).

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Henry James (1843-1916) American-born writer, gifted with talents in literature, psychology, and philosophy. James wrote 20 novels, 112 stories, 12 plays and a number of literary criticism. His models were Dickens, Balzac, and Hawthorne. James once said that he learned more of the craft of writing from Balzac "than from anyone else". "A novel is in its broadest sense a personal, a direct impression of life: that, to begin with, constitutes its value, which is greater or less according to the intensity of the impression." (from The Art of Fiction Henry James was born in New York City into a wealthy family. His father, Henry James Sr, was one of the best-known intellectuals in mid-nineteenth-century America, whose friends included Thoreau, Emerson and Hawthorne. James made little money from his novels. Once his friend, the writer Edith Wharton , secretly arranged him a royal advance of $8,000 for THE IVORY TOWER (1917), but the money actually came from Wharton's royalty account with the publisher. When Wharton sent him a letter bemoaning her unhappy marriage, James replied: "Keep making the movements of life." In his youth James traveled back and forth between Europe and America. He studied with tutors in Geneva, London, Paris, Bologna and Bonn At the age of nineteen he briefly attended Harvard Law School, but was more interested in literature than studying law. James published his first short story, 'A Tragedy of Errors' two years later, and then devoted himself to literature. In 1866-69 and 1871-72 he was contributor to the

The Turn of the Screw
by Henry James (1843 - 1916)
Type of Work:

Early psychological thriller Setting
England; nineteenth century Principal Characters
The "governess," an unnamed twenty- year-old woman
Mrs. Grose, an older housekeeper
Flora, an eight-year-old girl Miles, a ten-year-old boy Story Overveiw At Christmas time, a group of people in an old country home swapped ghost stories. One story tl)at particularly chilled tl-te group involved the visitation of a ghost to a young boy. When it was finished, a man in the group, Douglas, asked: "If the child gives the effect, another turn of the screw, what do you say to two children?" Weeks later, when Douglas was able to obtain the manuscript containing this second story, he read the narrative to his listeners, after prefacing it with a bit of background. The tale's author was a woman who had been his sister's governess, and Douglas was the only person to whom she had revealed her dreadful tale before her death ... On a pleasant June afternoon, a young lady of twenty, "the youngest of several daughters of a poor country parson," arrived in London to answer an advertisement for the position of governess. The advertiser was a bachelor who had been left guardian to his young nephew and niece. The uncle, a wealthy and charming gentleman, "beguiled" the young woman instantly The terms of her employment were quite simple: she was to take charge of the two children on his country estate of Bly in Essex, and to "never trouble him . . . neither appear nor complain nor write about anything." She would be replacing the former governess, a young lady who had died under curious circumstances. While the mystery surrounding the prior governess' death did cause the woman to Pause and consider, she nonetheless accepted the position and took the coach to Bly.
