William James
American Philosopher
William James was born in New York city in 1842 to a priviledged family. His early schooling took place in New York City. Early on, however, he attended schools in England, France, Germany and Switzerland. He was also taught by private tutors. By 1860 he was fluent in 5 languages and could count among his acquaintances family friends like Thoreau, Emerson, Greeley and Mill. In 1861 James entered Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard University. Soon after he transfered to Harvard's Medical School to hedge against his family's dwindling fortune. He found medicine boring and after a trip to the Amazon in 1865-6 he left America for the therapeutic baths of France and Germany for nearly two years, where he studied under Helmholtz and other leading physiologists, and became thoroughly conversant with the New Psychology. There were no professors of psychology in American universities before James began teaching the subject in 1875. The only forms of psychology then taught in the United States were phrenology and Scottish mental philosophy, an offshoot of associationism used chiefly as a defense of revealed religion. James himself had never taken a course in the New Psychology because none was available; as he once jested, 'The first lecture in psychology that I ever heard was the first I ever gave.' In 1878 he began one of his more important works, Principles of Psychology. He also married, in 1878, Alice H. Gibbens of Cambridge, Mass.

WILLIAM JAMES
"The very meaning of the conception of God lies in those differences which must be made in our experience if the conception be true." (The Will to Believe) Pragmatist philosopher and psychologist, James considered the differentiation between the mental and the material worlds artificial. Predictable outcomes of mental activity and experience were the best measures of truth. Educated at Harvard and in Europe, James started his varied career in the Harvard Department of physiology. From physiology, he later moved to psychology. His two-volume "Principles of Psychology" became regarded as a classic. From psychology, he moved on to philosophy. His most controversial works were written during his years as professor of philosophy at Harvard, where he became the centre of a much-admired brilliant group of teachers and writers. Although James appears to have changed disciplines, his approach to his subjects is consistent. In psychology, he adopted a "functional" approach. Our conception of mentality must be founded in what mentality does. In philosophy he was attracted to C.S. Pierce's pragmatism . Pierce demanded that the meaning of any concept or hypothesis lay in the "sensible difference" that its being true would make. James expanded the principle further to suggest that, if a concept can be defined by what you do with it, then truth must consist in a successful doing. An idea is not a mystery but a tool. Traditional

William James (1842-1910) stands as one of America’s preeminent philosophical thinkers on the nature of consciousness. James advocated that the field of psychology should develop around an integrated cognitive psychology of experiential consciousness. By asserting that consciousness does not exist as an independent entity, but rather as a function of particular lived states—of which waking consciousness is just one among many possible states of awareness—James experimented with, and gave philosophical credence to, the role of alternative states of consciousness in evolving conceptions of the self and society.
