Launch The Papers of John Jay, 1745-1829
(NEW YORK, December 13, 2002) Columbia University Libraries has launched The Papers of John Jay, 1745-1829, an image database and indexing tool comprised of thousands of pages scanned from photocopies and abstracts of original documents gathered from over 50 repositories by the John Jay publication project staff during the 1960s and 1970s. This new tool provides access to correspondence, memos, diaries, and diplomatic papers written by or to Jay, diplomat and first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and an early graduate of King's College. These files, collected under the direction of the late Professor Richard B. Morris , were maintained as sources for items to be used in a planned four-volume letterpress series entitled The Selected Unpublished Papers of John Jay . On the database, four essays, in addition to a biographical essay, introduce Jay: "The Jay Treaty," "Jay and New York," "Jay and Slavery," and "Jay and France."

John Jay
John Jay (December 12, 1745 - May 17, 1829) was the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1789 to 1794. In 1794, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to France. While in France, he was elected governor of New York State. He resigned from the Court, and served as governor of New York until 1800. President John Adams then renominated him to the court; the Senate quickly confirmed him, but he declined, citing his own poor health and the court's lack of "the energy, weight, and dignity which are essential to its affording due support to the national government." Jay was also the fifth President of the Continental Congress, and thus the leader of what was to become the United States, from December 10, 1778, until September 27, 1779. He was preceeded in office by Henry Laurens and succeeded by Samuel Huntington. Jay did not attend the Constitutional Convention, but contributed five essays to what later became the Federalist Papers . [Adapted from Wikipedia

    Summary of Religious Views:
Jay came from a Huguenot family, but ultimately adopted Episcopalianism. He seems to have been a believing Christian throughout his life, and took great pains to avoid discussing religion with those who did not agree with him. Like many others of his era, Jay harbored anti-Catholic feelings.
During the drafting of the New York constitution and bill of rights, Jay proposed several amendments to the religious tolerance clause, restricting the rights of Catholics unless they swore allegiance to the state superceding any allegiance to their Church or Pope. These amendments were defeated
