The life of Richard Jefferies
(John) Richard Jefferies (1848-1887), the Victorian author, naturalist and mystic, was born at Coate in the north Wiltshire countryside - now on the outskirts of Swindon - where his family farmed a smallholding of about forty acres. His father was a thoughtful man with a passionate love of nature but was unsuccessful as a farmer, with the result that the later years of Jefferies' childhood were spent in a household increasingly threatened by poverty. There were also, it seems, other tensions in the family. Amaryllis at the Fair , is anything but flattering. A combination of these difficulties and an early romantic desire for adventure led him at the age of sixteen to leave home with the intention of traversing Europe as far as Moscow. In this escapade he was accompanied by a cousin, but the journey was abandoned soon after they reached France.

See Sir Walter Besant, Eulogy of Richard Jefferies (1888); H. S. Salt, Richard Jefferies: a Study (1894); Edward Thomas, Richard Jefferies, his Life and Work (‘909). (W. BE.) superseded the old system of local stock companies. With the exception of minor parts, such as the First Gravedigger in Hamlet, which he played in an “all star combination” headed by Edwin Booth, Jefferson created no new character after 1865; and the success of Rip Van Winkle was so pronounced that he has often been called a one-part actor. If this was a fault, it was the public’s, who never wearied of his one masterpiece. Jefferson died on the 23rd of April 1905. No man in his profession was more honoured for his achievements or his character. He was the friend of many of the leading men in American politics, art and literature. He was an ardent fisherman and lover of nature, and devoted to painting. Jefferson was twice married: to an actress, Margaret Clements Lockyer (I 832—1861), in 1850, and in 1867 to Sarah Warren, niece of William Warren the actor. Jefferson’s Autobiography (New York, 1889) is written with admirable spirit and humour, and, its judgments with regard to the art of the actor and of the playwright entitle it to a place beside Cibber’s Apology. See William Winter, The Jeffersons (1881), and Life of Joseph Jefferson (1894); Mrs. E. P. Jefferson, Recollections of Joseph Jefferson (1909).

At Home on the Earth A New Selection of the Later Writings of Richard Jefferies
Selected and Introduced by Jeremy Hooker
Woodcuts by Agnes Miller Parker published by Green Books
Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) has long been recognized as an interpreter of English country life and a natural observer with few if any equals. He was an idealist, who believed that human beings could free themselves from outworn ideas and achieve a greatly enlarged spiritual and physical capacity. A "poet-naturalist" with an ecological vision who understood the place of human beings in relation to the "household" of life on Earth, he was both mystic and realist, and his writings show the beauty of "wild England" but also the harsh conditions of laboring life in the Victorian countryside. In his art of seeing, Jefferies was a precursor of modernist techniques, and an influence on modern nature writings and poetry. About the Author
Jeremy Hooker 's new selection represents Jefferies at his best, and reveals his contemporary significance. Hooker, a poet and critic who has made a special contribution to the "poetry of place," is the author of ten collections of poetry, and his critical writings include Writers in a Landscape (University of Wales Press, 1996). He is Professor of English Literature at the University of Glamorgan and president of the Richard Jefferies Society.

WHERE LONDON STOOD Home Introduction London Bridge is falling down Modern ruins, or "Industrial Archaeology" ... The 'prehistory' of ruins
Nineteenth Century Richard Jefferies (1848-1887). British author and naturalist who published a work of 'scientific romance' called After London; or Wild England (1885). Arguably his success lay in his vivid descriptions of the returning flora and fauna (which constitute the first, larger, part of the novel) rather than in characterisation or plot. Footpaths were concealed by the second year, but roads could be traced, though as green as the sward, and were still the best for walking, because the tangled wheat and weeds, and, in the meadows, the long grass, caught the feet of those who tried to pass through. Year by year the original crops of wheat, barley, oats, and beans asserted their presence by shooting up, but in gradually diminished force, as nettles and coarser plants, such as the wild parsnips, spread out into the fields from the ditches and choked them. Aquatic grasses from the furrows and water-carriers extended in the meadows, and with the rushes, helped to destroy or take the place of the former sweet herbage. Meanwhile the brambles, which grew very fast, had pushed forward their prickly runners farther and farther from the hedges till they now reached ten or fifteen yards. The briars had followed, and the hedges had widened to three or four times their first breadth, the fields being equally contracted. Starting from all sides at once, these brambles and briars in the course of about twenty years met in the centre of the largest fields.

    Ecology 3/5
Writing 4/5 This book is divided into two parts the first of which describes the ecological response to the human abandonment of Britain in the late 19th century. The second is a pictaquarese travel through the post-apocalyptic landscape. It was written in the 19th-century by Richard Jefferies (1848-1887), an English writer and naturalist. Ronald Wright cites it as an influence on A Scientific Romance Excerpt: The old me say their fathers told them that soon after the fields were left to themselves a change began to be visible. It became green everywhere in the first spring, after London ended, so that all the country looked alike. The meadows were green, and so was the rising wheat which had been sown, but which neither had been nor would receive any further care. Such arable fields as had not been sown, but where the last stubble had been ploughed up, were overrun with conch-grass, and where the short stubble had not been ploughed, the weeds hid it. So there was no place which was not more or less green; the footpaths were the greenest of all, for such is the nature of grass where it has once been trodden on, and by-and-by, as summer came on, the former roads were thinly covered with the grass that had spread out from the margins. In the autumn, as the meadows were not mown, the grass withered as it stood falling this way and that, as the wind had blown it; the seeds dropped, and the bents became a greyish-white, or, where the docks and sorrel were thick a brownish red. The wheat, after it had ripened, there being non one to reap it, also remained standing, and was eaten by clouds of sparrows, rooks, and pigeons, which flocked to it and were undisturbed, feasting at pleasure. As the winter came on, the crops were beaten down by the storms, soaked with the rain, and trodden upon by herds of animals.

    Thomas Bewick
Thomas Bewick was born at Ovingham, (10-12 miles west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) at Cherryburn, a farmhouse. This house has now been turned into a museum of his life and work.
He became an apprentice to an engraver in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, having to use metal rather than wood. When he had finished his apprenticeship he worked with his preferred medium, wood.
I quote: Bewick's sense of humour is very clear in a number of his pictures which portray a very earthy side of life in such a way that makes the viewer laugh with him.
He died and was buried at Ovingham.
Two years after his death, a particular swan was found to be of a distinct breed and was named the Bewick Swan after Thomas.
