48. A Message From Sankara Saranam
Thomas Paine (17371809) once wrote, The world is my country, to do good is myreligion. Or as Richard Jefferies (1848-1887) simply put it, In our age

What Great Men and Women Think of Religion: An Introduction
great misconception commonly held is that those who are religious are perforce ethical or moral. The real truth, however, is that our jails are filled with the religious and irreligious alike while the most unlikely criminal is the free thinker whether his philosophical search takes a spiritual or atheistic turn. It takes but little reflection to understand why the belief in God does not necessarily imply honesty, peacefulness, happiness, or even a love or devotion toward God for that matter.
Putting aside the age Jefferies wished to live in, organized religions historically have always had the uncanny knack for separating, nay keeping at odds, humanity and its divinity, not to mention anything holy. Rudyard Kipling once observed that "Religion has no influence on conduct." From what I have found, however, it seems, with all due respect, that Kipling was in error, or at best he was being very optimistic. Religious beliefs can very well influence one's behavior.
What Kipling meant, of course, was that religion has no influence to better or improve one's conduct. If religion is treated with superficial interest, then indeed one's conduct does not change for better or worse. However, if religion's influence, or lack of it, stopped there history would not be so full of cruelties and intolerance. The nature of religion when it is organized is to consider itself superior to other religions, beliefs, and systems of practice. It feeds off such an unhealthy complex. It is questionable whether an organized religion can even

Her first book The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons (1943) and the sequel Bonfires and Broomsticks (1947) were later reworked into Bed-Knob and Broomstick (1957), the basis for the 1971 Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks , starring Angela Lansbury. In 1952 the first of the books in the Borrowers series, The Borrowers was published to great critical acclaim. It won the Carnegie Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award Book, and was named an ALA Distinguished Book. This was followed by The Borrowers Afield The Borrowers Afloat The Borrowers Aloft Poor Stainless: A New Story About the Borrowers (1971), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982), which includes Poor Stainless . The last title sees the borrowers safe and sound in a new home, the Old Rectory, coincidentally one of Mary Norton's last postal addresses. The Borrowers has appeared as a series on British television, and has been recently made into a Hollywood movie. Another, non-series title, Are All the Giants Dead?

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~villages/wiltshire/the_ogbournes.htm
The Ogbournes Wiltshire is the home of one of the most unusual and probably shortest river names, and that is the River Og!! It runs north to south and then joins the Kennet between Marlborough and Mildenhall. Much of the time there is always water in the lower part but the upper reaches are quite often dry for most of the year, which is commonplace among the streams on the chalklands. The little valley in which the river runs is alongside the Marlborough to Swindon Road and was once used by a railway line and is the old Roman road from Mildenhall. Ogbourne Maizey, or St Michael which is strange as it has no church is the southernmost of the villages, it has a Jacobean Manor house which has bands of sarsen stone, flint and later additions of brick. On the main doorway is the date '1636'. In some places tall arched Georgian windows have been inserted though there are some original stone mullions. In the little lane to Rockley there are some 17th century cottages and racing stables were added in 1903.
