Joaquin Miller Park City of Oakland, Alameda County Getting there From Highway 24 in Alameda County, exit Highway 13. Drive south on Highway 13 about 3 miles, then exit Joaquin Miller Road. At the base of the exit ramp, turn left, cross over the highway, then bear right onto Joaquin Miller Road. Drive uphill about 0.8 mile, then turn left onto Sanborn Drive (look for the Woodminster sign). Drive about 0.1 mile on Sanborn Drive, and park in the lot (or along the side of the road) near the ranger station. Details There is a medium-sized paved lot, but many people park along the side of Sanborn Drive. Mind the no parking signs. If there is no parking inside the park, you can easily and legally park on the side of Joaquin Miller Road and walk in. No entrance or parking fees. Restrooms, pay phone, maps, and drinking water at the ranger station. There is one designated handicapped parking spot in the parking lot (which also services the Joaquin Miller Community Center), but trails here are poorly suited to wheelchairs. AC Transit bus #53 stops in front of the park. Rules Some trails are open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians. There are a few closed to bikes, and some trails are signed hiking only. Dogs are permitted on leash only (but are not allowed in picnic areas). Park is open from dawn to dusk.

Give us a holler Joaquin Miller , born 1837 Joaquin Miller was known as a "character" in his day, and today his reputation is not much better. But, he was an early western figure who influenced many of his time and those who came after. While his life and his writings have been subject to much criticism, he helped create some of the enduring Old West myths. When Miller couldn't find success in America, he took his show on the road to Britain and became the popular "Poet of the Sierras." It's said that he inspired Buffalo Bill's career. Miller has been called a "poseur" and "a vulgar fraud" and worse, and Bret Harte refused to publish any of his poems in his Overland Express Still, at one time his poem Columbus was known by every school child. We've included one of his poems (a love poem to one of his wives) and some links to other folks' sites that tell more about this colorful writer from our past. His subsequent writings offer a vibrant portrayal of our early mining camps, the interactions between the whites and Native Americans, the beauty of the mountain, and the rich game to be found locally. Of course, just how much fact he mixed with fiction is open to question. Referring to Miller's Life Amongst the Modocs , Wells' 1881 History of Siskiyou County complains that Miller has taken all the leading events of Northern California, most of which happened long before he appeared there, made himself the central figure, distorted the facts, and given them to the world as a truthful account of the dealings of the white men with the Indians. Whether literally true, true only in spirit, or even a mix of imagination and observation, his work is often inspiring and always worth reading. Miller's Life Amongst the Modocs: Unwritten History would, as Miesse points out, perhaps be better named "Life Amongst the Wintu," or "Life Amongst the Shasta." Still, the work includes two chapters that concern the mountain: Chapter 1, " Shadows of Shasta ," and Chapter 19, " The Indians' Account of the Creation While most of Miller's local writings remain centered on the local Native Americans, Miller was also quite capable of discussing the wealth of local game. I have been working on the stone wall all day, because the earthquake doesn't come this way and my walls will stand till the cows come home. Were I to rebuild San Francisco, I would put all that and San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Alameda, Oakland, and Berkeley, all in one broad city of one and two-story houses as in the City of Mexico, and I'd call the whole bunch San Francisco. The birds hid when the earthquake came. My chapel was open at the time. It is always open except when strangers come and I have to shut them out, but I was lying in bed after five and wide awake, for I always go to bed with the birds and get up with the birds, and the first I knew my cattle began to low and my cats came into my chapel, and I thought there might be a strange dog. I got up, and looked out for the dog, but it was nothing of the sort. The cats were under my great brass bed and I never witnessed such stillness. I lay down again and then the sun burst over the hills and San Francisco was silver and gold. The streets seemed wide, bright and steep, and I've never seen the city so large, but the stillness was terrible and the light was unnatural, and then two little talented birds came into the chapel and a humming bird out of the apple tree came in and there was a bump and a thump as if I were in a small boat bumping against a wharf.

District 4's natural beauty - Joaquin Miller Park by Dick Spees Up in Joaquin Miller Park, a series of projects will expand public uses in the open space between Woodminster Cascade and Joaquin Miller's historic cabin, and will enlarge and rebuild restrooms at Woodminster Theatre. We won support from the City Council to include $475,000 in the 2001-03 budget for these projects. Woodminster Theatre has been producing a summer series of outdoor American musical theater since 1967. This popular summer spot has a large and loyal audience, many of whom enjoy picnics in Joaquin Miller Park prior to the show. This year, its 35th anniversary season, Woodminster produced "Carousel" in July, and is presenting "Barnum" in August and "My Fair Lady" in September. The Joaquin Miller (1837-1913) Collection The Joaquin Miller (1837-1913) Collection of manuscripts and printed books was assembled by Willard Samuel Morse and purchased by the library in 1938. Morse's correspondence and typewritten notebooks concerning the collection are included. Printed matter by and about this colorful, turn-of-the-century, western writer includes approximately 125 items, either of first or limited editions, many beautifully illustrated, and some with laid-in autographs. Photostats and clippings of newspaper and magazine articles number more than nine hundred pieces, while there are approximately two hundred portraits of Miller between 1859 and 1912. Original manuscripts, letters, and inscribed photographs numbering approximately seventy-five items complete the Miller Collection. POEMS BY JOAQUIN MILLER: Byron Sea-Blown The Yukon MILLER, JOAQUIN . Born in Wabash District, Indiana, November 10, 1841; died at "The Heights," above San Francisco, California, 1913. The picturesque career of Joaquin Miller surpasses any romance that came from his hand. When a lad he tramped from his home in Oregon to the Sacramento Valley where gold fields were being opened and did whatever he could turn his hand to about the camps. He lived familiarly with the Indians and passed through many adventures in returning to his home in Oregon. Here he studied law, which he practiced for some time in Canyon City, and became a judge of Grant County. In 1870 he went to London with the manuscript of "Songs of the Sierras." Here he met Browning Arnold , and other poets of the period and created a sensation in conventional London by his romantic personality. After his return to America he spent some time in journalistic work in Washington, D.C., but left it for California where he established himself in a beautiful home on "The Heights" above the Golden Gate. Save for occasional excursions, such as his trip to the Klondike, his remaining years were spent at this home. Joaquin Miller had great power to invoke the wild and majestic aspects of nature, and while he was often the victim of his facility, at his best he was a poet of rare gifts and unexcelled in his field as the interpreter of Wester life and landscape.

Among many great things about this park is the fact that mountain biking is permitted on most singletrack trails, and mountain bikers are not treated like pond scum (as they unfortunately are in many other Bay Area open spaces). The bad thing is that a few reckless mountain bikers do tend to abuse the privilege by riding off legal trails, threatening to lose us all the privilege of riding there. We law-abiding cyclists are in the process of concerted efforts to bring those renegades in line through an information campaign (headed up by the Bicycle Trail Council of the East Bay, whose web site can be viewed at www.btceastbay.org ). If that fails, we will be forced to kick their butts! Meanwhile, we are still enjoying the park's multi-use approach, where most hikers, cyclists, joggers, dogs and other users tend to get along just fine. home cross-country trek francophilia night ... washington, d.c.

Since the Save the Redwoods League donated the Redwood Grove to the city of Oakland in 1928, it has been extensively used by a multitude of user groups including: Scouts, picnickers, hikers, motorcyclists, day campers, bird watchers, naturalists, bicyclists, dog-walkers and joggers. Still, despite being held hostage by its geographical location right at the edge of an urban area that now includes over six million people, the park retains much of its natural beauty, health, vitality, and majesty. Unfortunately a recent proposal to ban bikes from the park has rekindled the age-old dispute over equal access. So, please, follow all of the proper biking rules. This site is always being added to. Since Big Trees Trail and a couple others are closed in the winter, this is a short ride if you don't have much time. Still, the scenery is beautiful and this is a wonderful park. Distance: 7.35 Miles Elevation Gain/Loss: 1800 Feet Difficulty: Moderate Technicality: Riding Time: ¾ - 1¼ Hours Season: November to April (rainy season) Directions: From Oakland, take Highway 580 to Highway 24 East toward Walnut Creek. Then take Highway 13 South. After 3 miles, take the Joaquin Miller Exit. Turn left at the stop sign. At the second stop sign, turn left of Joaquin Miller Road. Drive up the hill. Halfway up the hill, turn left on Sanborn if you want to pick up a free map at the ranger station. If not, keep going up the hill and turn left on Skyline. Park about ½ mile on Skyline along the side of the road at Sequoia Point. Any text in blue will be about the ride and personal experiences. So, if you want to skip what happened, don't read the blue, small text.
