"Joaquin Miller, Poet of the Sierras, and once an Oregon resident, visited Lewis and Clark Exposition today and was greeted by a throng of admirers, more than 2,000 strong, which assembled in and around the building. "Mr. Miller gave a short address in which he praised the state's natural resources and its people. If he retains any bitterness resulting from the treatment he received as a resident of this state, he concealed the fact, and was geniality itself. A banquet in his honor will be held this evening." Back to: School Recommendations and Oakland Public Schools Jan 2003 We are very happy with Joaquin Miller School! We currently have a third grader there, and our second daughter will be entering kindergarten in the fall. Oakland teachers are paid relatively well (compared to other Bay Area school districts), and because Joaquin Miller is considered to be a very good public school, it attracts some excellent teachers. We have been particularly impressed that the principal and teachers take a lot of care assigning students to classes and teachers, so that the students get the most out of each grade level. There is a strong sense of community at the school and a lot of parent participation in the form of fundraising and also volunteering in the class room. The school's principal is extremely active, and is a strong leader and compassionate person. The PTA organizes fundraising for student enrichment, teacher assistants, equipment for the school, special assemblies, etc. The fall auction, a walkathon, and various other fun activities during the school year raise a substantial amount of money for the school. There is a computer lab, and good library, and a new play structure. The PTA also offers extra classes (for a fee) that children can take before or after school; examples are spanish, music, additional science and art classes, as well as chess ecology club, etc.

The Chinese and the Exclusion Act
By Joaquin Miller
North American Review 173 (Dec. 1901). I t is telegraphed to us of the Pacific coast that the head of the American Federation of Labor, the Secretary of the National Federation, and others, have called on the Executive to urge the re-enactment of the Chinese Exclusion Act; and it is, perhaps, in order now to inquire whether or not we of the West and the real laborers of the United States want, or ever did want, this Exclusion Act; also, to ask what these men know of China, the Chinese, or real American labor? There are laborers and laborers. The real working man, in the main, is on "the firing line," his shoulder to the wheel; his face is not against his fellow man but for him; he is heading to the front; he is in the van of civilization, as his fathers, the founders of this mighty Republic, were before him, and he is proud, happy and content to be there. He is a Lincoln, a Garfield. He is a builder, not a destroyer. And these silent men at the front, of the forest and the field, outnumber the noisy city "laborer," so called, ten to one, although you would think the figures exactly reversed, to hear the city man and read his noisy resolutions. Moreover, these silent laboring men on the firing line, the men of the forest, the field, the miners of the frontier, are in the main Americans. Get the names of the noisy city "laborers," and you will see that they are foreigners mainly, many of the names reading with an accent that is grimly suggestive of the incendiary and the anarchist.

The Ruinous Cost of Chinese Exclusion
A Laboring Man to Laboring Men
By Joaquin Miller
North American Review 186 (Nov. 1907). "Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad." T rue it is, skilled labor is getting higher wages than it received last year, in the city, but if it costs now much more than it cost then for bread and meat, where is the good or profit to the workingman? And is it quite equitable that the laboring man of the city should entirely ruin the laboring man of the country, without even saying so much as "by your leave"? Last year, and I think my case a fairly average one among the small farmers, I was able to pay my taxes from the income of my land. I rented most of it to dairymen. At that time, they could get hay put in the barn for seven dollars a ton. This year they have to pay fifteen dollars a ton, and they find trouble in getting it delivered, even at that. They are moving out. And why can't they get hay at a fair figure? Simply because there is not enough labor in the land to harvest and deliver it. There is more hay this year than in any one year in the last twenty. There are not only tons, but hundreds and hundreds of tons, of hay rotting and rusting in the dust only a few miles from my back door. And it will rot in the rain this winter, and cattle must die in herds. And then meat and bread and all things must take another leap upward.

by Joe Scarborough, meet director This fall, we got our 15 minutes of fame when "Bay Area Backroads," the popular local show that airs on KRON-TV (Channel 4 in most areas), asked to film an event. Unfortunately, they could only shoot during the week, so we put together this Tuesday outing, which drew a surprisingly large (and exciting) crowd - everyone from BAOC stalwarts to a second-grade class to the Oakland SWAT team! Even on-camera host Doug McConnell ran a short course. Below are the complete results The resulting 6-minute segment gave a very good presentation and explanation of orienteering. It first aired on Sunday, November 29, and was rerun several times, in addition to appearing on the Bay Area Backroads website . (We also have videotapes available for outreach events and other activities.) Also check out the photo page I put together describing the event.
Designing Courses for Spectactors and Cameras
There are two problems with orienteering as a spectator sport: It takes place in the forest, for the most part out of sight; and competitors are separated in time and distance. My solution was to devise a format that provided a lot of close-in action and a measure of head-to-head competition without the problem of following. I figured that a spectator-friendly event would suit the cameras as well as show that orienteering is indeed a legitimate sport, not just the offbeat pastime too often presented on the feature page.

National Orienteering Day "Come and Try It" event
Oakland, CA
Saturday, May 4, 2002
by Ian Tidswell , meet director We had a great turnout for the National Orienteering Day event in Oakland - over 200 participants, with 75% of them novices. From the beautiful weather, interesting courses, and comments, perhaps we will see a few of them back out again soon! The WHITE course , featuring fairly straightforward navigation, was the most popular course. The course was longer than usual, but there were no complaints. Pat McLaughlin tore around the course in 20 minutes - excellent job! Most others took longer to savor the course. The YELLOW course , with slightly more challenging navigation and a bit more climb, was my personal favorite. It featured great views across the Bay to San Francisco and the Golden Gate and toured most of the monuments in the park. Pat was also fastest on this course, but no one took longer than 1-1/2 hours for this or the white course. The ORANGE course was longer, steeper, and more challenging. It visited the upper part of the park with the open redwood forests. Wyatt Riley spent the least time enjoying this course - less than 35 minutes.
    A couple of interesting pieces of analysis:
  • 40% of beginners traveled 10 miles or less to the event, and 80% traveled 25 miles or less.

Columbus
by Joaquin Miller
Behind him lay the gray Azores,
Behind the Gates of Hercules;
Before him not the ghost of shores;
Before him only shoreless seas.
The good mate said: "Now must we pray,
For lo! the very stars are gone.
Brave Admiral, speak, what shall I say?"
"Why, say : 'Sail on! sail on! and on!'"
"My men grow mutinous day by day;
My men grow ghastly, wan and weak." The stout mate thought of home; a spray Of salt wave washed his swarthy cheek. What shall I say , brave Admiral, say, If we sight naught but seas at dawn?" "Why, you shall say at break of day, 'Sail on! sail on! sail on! and on!'" They sailed and sailed, as winds might blow, Until at last the blanched mate said: "Why, now not even God would know Should I and all my men fall dead. These very winds forget their way, For God from these dread seas is gone. Now speak, brave Admiral, speak and say" He said: "Sail on! sail on! and on!" They sailed. They sailed. Then spake the mate: "This mad sea shows his teeth tonight.

A CALIFORNIA DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL
Miller School reflects the recent changes in the population and economy of the City of Burbank perhaps more than any other elementary school in the District. Currently the student population of approximately 900 Kindergarten - Grade 5 students is 29.2% Hispanic, 3.6% Black, 4.7% Asian, 2% Filipino and 62% White. Approximately one-third of students identified as White are of Mid-Eastern ethnicity. Our language census shows an even greater diversity. In March of 1997, 651 or 72% of the students spoke a language other than English. Armenian, Spanish, Korean and Arabic were the highest in number of the 21 languages listed. 227 students (25%) were classified FEP (Fluent English Proficient) while 424 (47%) were LEP (Limited English Proficient). We welcome and embrace the broad cultural and ethnic diversity and feel that it is a strength of our school. While pursuing academic excellence, there is also a high regard for respecting and preserving the traditions of all cultures as well as identifying and fostering common values that unite all people. We believe that our students are benefiting from this rich and varied learning environment. The Miller tradition includes a dedicated staff, community involvement, high expectations, and a strong academic curriculum. Our goals for students focus on literacy and math. Students are actively engaged every day in learning activities which build speaking, reading, writing, and problem solving skills in meaningful context. Our goal for LEP students is competence in English. In addition, we believe all students will acquire social and critical thinking skills needed for responsible citizenship in a democratic society. Miller School is a school where students and staff want to be. Our attendance is significantly high (95%), verifying that students like coming to school each day to learn. Parents choose to have their children attend Miller School, even when they have the opportunity to transfer to other schools. Each and every day

- is important. Student absences must be reported by parents or guardians in written form, in person, or by phone call. Unexcused absences will lead to consequences like detention, Saturday Schools, lowered grades, etc. Only students with excused absences will be allowed to make up work. In order to comply with state attendance regulations, and, more importantly, to ensure the best education for each child, we request parents send their child/children to school regularly and on time. When a child has been absent because of illness or other reasons, we require parents to send a note explaining the reason for the child's absence or tardiness. Please include on the note:
