California Literature: Joaquin Miller

from Life Amongst the Modocs: Unwritten History
" This man threw down the body of the child among the dead, and rushed across to where a pair of ruffians had dragged up another, a little girl, naked, bony, thin as a shadow, starved into a ghost. He caught her by the hair with a howl of delight, placed the pistol to her head, and turned around as if to point the muzzle out of range of his companions who stood around on the other side. The child did not cry she did not even flinch. Perhaps she did not know what it meant; but I should rather believe she had seen so much of death there, so much misery, the steady, silent work of the monster famine through the village day after day, that she did not care. I saw her face: it did not even wince. Her lips were thin and fixed, and firm as iron.

THE JOAQUIN MILLER CABIN
POETRY SERIES
In 1976 through the efforts of Jim Beall, the National Park Service gave the Word Works permission to use the Joaquin Miller Cabin located in Washington, DC's Rock Creek Park. Initially, Word Works poets gathered in the cabin for poetry workshops. By candle and fireplace light, the participants shared their work and provided criticism to each other. The reading series grew out of these early activities. Karren Alenier founded the Miller Cabin Poetry Series and ran programs there until 1983. Those years are documented in WHOSE WOODS THESE ARE, an anthology of poetry, anecdotes, and photos. Jacklyn Potter has been running the Miller Cabin programs since 1984. Each summer for eight weeks beginning in June, the program commences at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Audience participation averages 50 to 100 people per night. With a volunteer committee, Jacklyn selects readers from a large pool of applicants. Both well-established authors and first time readers share the podium. Funding for the series comes from the audience who are asked by mail prior to the opening night for contributions to pay the poets.

The following would be much more natural if i used 'link' but i do not want to bring in any presuppositions about what a link is. Continuing up past the golf course, I got onto Grizzly peak and followed it on to Skyline. I then took Skyline down to where it meets Joaquin Miller Road where I turned around and headed back up. Eventually I came down from Grizzly peak to the Claremont and crossed over the top edge of the campus to head into Soda Hall. 9/16/00 29.5 Miles. Mount Tam and Bolinas Ridge, Phil, Scott and I. Starting out north of Mt Tam, we quickly headed up to the east peak via Eldridge Grade passing by Lake Lagunitas. from the summit, we headed west, past the West Peak and north on to Rocky Ridge. We then headed west again towards Stinson Beach to catch the Bolinas Ridge. What a view.... Looking strait down into the Stinson beach area!!! Heading north on the ridge we came to the south end of the Bolinas Ridge Trail before heading back east towards the start. 9/10/00 22.4 Miles. Joaquin Miller Regional Park, Sean, Phil, (4 CAL team guys) and I. Starting out at Sproul Plaza, we made quick work of Tunnel Road to take us to the Skyline gate of Redwood Canyon. We took a short section of West Ridge Trail before heading off down into Joaquin Miller Park. Taking a couple of trails including Cinderella, Chaparral, ... we eventually called it a day and headed down the road into the Oakland Hills by the 13. Wandering through a maze of little streets lefts us back on College avenue which we took back to campus.

Dear all, it seems that we all are in agreement to support language neutral constructs to identify ebXML components (including aggregates). They would allow to cross reference ebXML human readable tags in whatever language. Another benefit could be the mapping with interfaches of applications and/or with other former or future eb relevant standards (ANSI X12, EDIFACT, ...). Thanks Arofan for this support! Absolutely! I could not agree more. It's why i wrote: "Everyone can use software to display the data with field names they can read and to provide explanations for what those field names mean." I side with those who suggest using identifiers. I feel it is a much better way than hanging our hat on natural language tags, whether English or so-called "Foreign." I don't want to repeat here all the traffic about the problems with dependence on exclusive use of natural language tags. -Original Message- From: Joaquin Miller [
