J.C.F. Johnson
Born in South Australia, Joseph Colin Johnson was an illustrator, journalist and politician.
Euchre in the Bush was painted while he was living in Victoria. His visit to the goldfields around 1864 may have provided him with first-hand knowledge of the characters that appear in his work.
A Chinese silk waist sash, blue hat and crossed clapping sticks, used to create noise and ward off evil spirits, reveal that the card game took place in the Chinaman's hut. The theatrical, stage-like setting and detailed emphasis given to the men's facial features also suggest Johnson was keen to capture the `types' he encountered on the goldfields.
This popular image later appeared as an engraving in the Australasian Sketcher in 1876. Euchre in the Bush (c.1866/67) oil on canvas on board Clarice May Megaw Bequest, 1980

Timeline of Positive New Thought and Positive Thinking Authors
Belief in the human spirit, in oneself and in the process of life are the basic tenets of New Thought and Positive Thinking literature. The basic theory is that the stories we tell ourselves determine how our lives will go.

    Here's a Positive Thought
American mystic Vernon Howard (1918 - 1992) taught us that pictures communicate large amounts of data to the mind. He gave us Psycho-Pictography: The New Way to Use the Miracle Power of Your Mind (1965). The book offers dozens of healing pictures. Following is an example of a healing psycho-pictograph. Contemplate this story whenever you're afraid of a person who abuses power.
"Suppose you see a tiger in a zoo. Now, you know very well that this tiger is a cruel and vicious animal. He would destroy you if he could. You understand his ferocity, yet you are unafraid of him; his cruelty does not alarm you. Why are you fearless? Because you know he is powerless to harm you. The bars protect you. January 2000 January 1999 January 1998 February 2000 ... Return Home Ernst Mielck Symphony in F Minor Concert Piece in E Minor Villa-Lobos Symphonies, Vol. 1 ALEXANDER TCHEREPNIN (1899-1977): Symphony No. 3 in F Sharp, Op. 83, Symphony No. 4 in E, Op. 91, Piano Concerto No. 6, Op. 99. The third symphony (1952) is a brilliant work with much use of brass and Oriental melodies in the first and third movements (the latter of which builds to an extraordinary climax). Although Tcherepnin's cosmopolitan background is everywhere apparent, there are moments when this symphony could have been written by Malcolm Arnold. The fourth, from 1959, is in only three movements - a brash first, a waltz for the second, and an extraordinarily bleak andante finale based on ancient Russian chant. The concerto is from 1965 and sandwiches a Bartokian slow movement between two high energy fast ones. Noriko Ogawa (piano), Singapore Symphony Orchestra; Lan Shui. BIS CD-1018 (Sweden) CECIL ARMSTRONG GIBBS (1889-1960): Prelude, Andante and Finale, Op. 112, Dale and Fell, Threnody for Walter de la Mare, A Spring Garland, Op. 84, Almayne, Op. 71, Suite for Strings. Gibbs is known in his native England almost entirely for his copious collection of songs yet he also wrote three symphonies and much chamber and instrumental music. This release concentrates on works for string orchestra and, notwithstanding his reputation for light music and works for amateur choral societies, the 1946 Prelude, Andante and Finale is a composition of passionate intensity perhaps connected with the loss of his son in battle during the war. The Threnody (1956) is a heartfelt lament for a life-long friend while the remainder of the pieces here are of a pastoral and cheerful character, even the Suite, which antedates Gibbs' death by only a year. Guildhall Strings; Robert Salter. Hyperion CDA 67093 (England)
