Ben Jonson
Ben Jonson was born in London, the son of a clergyman who died before Jonson's birth, and was educated at Westminster School. After working as a bricklayer for his stepfather and serving as a soldier, he became an actor and playwright. In 1599 he was imprisoned along with other actors for his part in a scurrilous play, Isle of Dogs, and later again for killing an actor in a duel. His volatile nature is reflected in his poetry and plays, which are a combination of satirical humour and scholarly classicism. He became a court poet and masque writer to James I in collaboration with Inigo Jones and is best remembered for his comedy plays Volpene, The Alchemist, and Bartholemew Fair. He was appointed City Chronologer in 1628, holding the post until his death in 1637. A Farewell to the World

Ben Jonson (1573-1637) Come, My Celia Come, my Celia, let us prove, While we can, the sports of love; Time will not be ours forever; He at length our good will sever. Spend not then his gifts in vain. Suns that set may rise again; But if once we lose this light, ‘Tis with us perpetual night. Why should we defer our joys? Fame and rumor are but toys. Cannot we delude the eyes Of a few poor household spies, Or his easier ears beguile, So removed by our wile? ‘Tis no sin love’s fruit to steal; But the sweet thefts to reveal, To be taken, to be seen, These have crimes accounted been.

Ben Jonson - The Alchemist
Ben Jonson (1573-1637) was one of the foremost of the Jacobean dramatists. He wrote a number of plays (both comedies and tragedies) and a series of stylised masques for the Court. He had a keen eye for the follies of his contemporaries, and in this play he particularly satirises human gullibility. He displays considerable understanding of alchemy and makes many jokes based on its symbolism (and in two places even refers to Dee and Kelly). He obviously expected the audience for this play to have some knowledge of alchemical ideas. Jonson's The Alchemist written in 1610, thus presents us with a satirical window through which we can see one way in which alchemy was perceived in the opening decade of the 17th century.

I sing the birth was born tonight,
The Author both of life and light;
    The angels so did sound it,
And like the ravished shepherds said,
Who saw the light, and were afraid,
    Yet searched, and true they found it.
The Son of God, the eternal King, That did us all salvation bring,     And freed the soul from danger; He whom the whole world could not take, The Word, which heaven and earth did make,     Was now laid in a manger. The Father's wisdom willed it so, The Son's obedience knew no "No,"     Both wills were in one stature; And as that wisdom had decreed, The Word was now made Flesh indeed,     And took on Him our nature. A Hymn to God the Father Hear me, O God! A broken heart Is my best part. Use still thy rod, That I may prove Therein thy Love. If thou hadst not Been stern to me, But left me free, I had forgot Myself and thee. For sin's so sweet

To hear Robert Pinsky read "His Excuse for Loving," click here Is it possible to write in rhyme and meter more gracefully and plainly than Ben Jonson (1573-1637) does in "His Excuse for Loving"? In couplets and the "beheaded" (first syllable omitted) four-foot iambic line, familiar from "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," he speaks his mind directly and eloquently about feeling love ardently when no longer a youth. The closing lines of the poem, with the sentence dancing eagerly over and across the ends of the lines, suggest that William Butler Yeats read Jonson closelyand indeed Yeats and Ezra Pound did study Jonson during the months when they shared a cottage in the country. Robert Pinsky Let it not your wonder move,
Less your laughter, that I love.

First Volume of "The Ben Jonson Journal" Published
March 21, 1995
Contact: Richard Harp, 895-0919
Editors Richard Harp of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Stanley Stewart of the University of California, Riverside, take great pleasure in announcing the publication of the first volume of "The Ben Jonson Journal," dedicated to the publication of essays and book reviews related to the works of the English poet Ben Jonson and his contemporaries. Ben Jonson (1573-1637), the consulate Renaissance man, was arguably the greatest English poet and dramatist of the seventeenth century. The stepson of a London bricklayer, Jonson was one of the most colorful men of his time. Soldier, actor, playwright, and poet, he was friend to the likes of such luminaries as playwrights William Shakespeare (who acted in one of Jonson's plays) and George Chapman, poet John Donne, scientist and philosopher Francis Bacon, and explorer Sir Walter Ralegh. Jonson's literary prestige and influence were unrivaled during the reign of King James I (1603-1625), for whom he wrote a number of court musical entertainments known as masques. His plays were widely popular during the period and remain so today. Such plays as "The Alchemist" and "Volpone" played to sold-out audiences during the period and modern productions continue to draw large crowds. A strong-willed man, Jonson was described by his contemporaries as fearless, warm-hearted, and intellectually honest. Recognized today primarily for his plays, his greatest achievement during his lifetime was his poetry, for which he was granted a pension by King James in 1616, making Jonson the first unofficial poet laureate of England. Jonson was also one of the first writers of the period to take an active interest in publishing his works for a commercial audience, supervising the printing of his collection of poems in "The Forest" and "The Epigrams" in the year of Shakespeare's death, 1616.
