Teresa Trupiano Barry's Essay:
My favorite book collection (I have several) features books by and about nineteenth-century American women. It began innocently enough six years ago as I started looking for books by Ann S. Stephens, a popular and prolific author, whose works are the subject of my dissertation. In the course of looking for Stephens' fiction, I came across works by other nineteenth-century American authors such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and E. D. E. N. Southworth (after all many bookstores organize their wares in
semi- (chaotic) alphabetical order). Who could resist titles such as Changed Brides or Tried for Her Life? Although I would like to collect as many first editions as possible, two major considerations prevent this: 1. money - I am a graduate student (need I say more?); and, 2. practicality - nineteenth-century American women are the subject of my research as well as my book collection. Rare books are not for underlining and marginalia, and no matter how famous I may become as a scholar of nineteenth-century American women's writing, I doubt that my marginalia would increase the price of a book in the way that, say, Coleridge's did. So, I try to get modern reprints of those works that are available. If I need to study works from my collection in careful detail, I make photocopies and use them for close study. Whenever I go to major cities, I haunt the used bookstores to see if I can find goodies to add to my collection. I attend the local Antiquarian Book Sale whenever possible, and I have recently added to my collection via the Internet. Family and friends are aware of my passion and have generously contributed to my collection. Although my collection is still small, 42 volumes, it is growing. Any of Stephens' works tops my list of wants. I feel fortunate that I now own nine of her novels. I would love to own one of her dime novels, in any nineteenth-century format, but those are well beyond my price range. I was surprised to discover, in assembling this bibliography, that this collection contains 10 first editions. But my interests are eclectic - as long as a book is by or about nineteenth-century women, I am captivated.

    Samantha at the Philippine Reservation
Excerpt from Marietta Holley, Samantha at the St. Louis Exposition, by Josiah Allen's Wife (New York: G. W. Dillingham Co., 1904), chapter 14. W ell, we rid round considerable so's to give Molly a view of the Cascades and big buildin's, and then we went on to the Philippines. This is the largest single exhibit at the Fair and covers forty-seven acres of beautiful woodland and water spaces, and is the largest colonial display ever made. I told Josiah as we walked towards it, Molly and Blandina goin' a little ahead, "What wuz the use of travelin' so fur to see our new possessions?" "Yes," sez he; "no use spendin' so much money." This wuz to me one of the most interestin' exhibits at the Fair. And I thought it a first rate idee to show off to the world the almost limitless wealth as well as the hard problems that face Uncle Sam in his new possessions, for like a careful pa he will see that they learn how to take care of themselves before he sets 'em up in independent housekeepin'. We went over a fine bridge, copied from one of their own into the walled city of Manila. Here in one room you see all of its war exhibits, immense cannons, the blow guns of the Negritos; axes the Iggorote head-hunters used to cut off the heads of their enemies. The Moro cris, the wooden guns and bamboo cannons and home-made powder used in 'em by the insurgent army with the rough machinery used in makin' it.

    CHAPTER XXXVIII
    The Bend in the road
Marilla went to town the next day and returned in the evening. Anne had gone over to Orchard Slope with Diana and came back to find Marilla in the kitchen, sitting by the table with her head leaning on her hand. Something in her dejected attitude struck a chill to Anne's heart. She had never seen Marilla sit limply inert like that. "Are you very tired, Marilla?" "YesnoI don't know," said Marilla wearily, looking up. "I suppose I am tired but I haven't thought about it. It's not that." "Did you see the oculist? What did he say?" asked Anne anxiously. "Yes, I saw him. He examined my eyes. He says that if I give up all reading and sewing entirely and any kind of work that strains the eyes, and if I'm careful not to cry, and if I wear the glasses he's given me he thinks my eyes may not get any worse and my headaches will be cured. But if I don't he says I'll certainly be stone-blind in six months. Blind! Anne, just think of it!" For a minute Anne, after her first quick exclamation of dismay, was silent. It seemed to her that she could
