Immanuel Kant, widely acknowledged to have been one of the greatest of all philosophers, was born in Königsburg, East Prussia. At the age of 8 he entered the Collegium Fridiricianum, a pietistic Latin school; he remained there for 8 1/2 years and then entered the University of Königsberg in 1740 to study philosophy, mathematics, and physics. In 1756 he was granted a degree and made a lecturer, and in 1770 he became a professor.
Kant's thought was mainly influenced by the rationalism of Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz and Christian Wolff and the empiricism of David Hume. His greatest work, the Critique of Pure Reason (1781), is a synthesis of rationalism and empiricism, both of which in themselves, he believed, gave a one-sided view of knowledge. To understand this Critique one needs to understand Kant's logical system. He divides all judgements into a) analytic or synthetic judgements and b)

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) Theory of Aesthetics (The Critique of Judgment)
    Kant is an 18th century German philosopher whose work initiated dramatic changes in philosophy.
  • Like many Enlightenment thinkers, he holds our mental faculty of reason in high esteem;
  • He believes that it is our reason that invests the world we experience with structure.
  • He believes that it is the "faculty of judgment that enables us to have experience of beauty and grasp those experiences as part of an ordered, natural world with purpose. -1-

IMMANUEL KANT 1724-1804 1724 Born April 22, in Königsberg, East Prussia. His father a saddler, his parents lower middle class, simple people, Lutheran Pietists. Kant remained deeply religious throughout his life. 1732 Admitted to Collegium Fridericianum, a local high school, through the intervention of a preacher and a professor at the University of Königsberg. Education was solidly Pietist and classical (lots of Latin). 1740 Admitted to University of Königsberg, where under the influence of Martin Knutzen, a very "extraordinary" teacher, he abandoned his intention to study classics and took up philosophy. Knutzen introduced him to the work of Christian Wolff (1679-1754), who had developed Leibniz's philosophy into a rationalistic system. Knutzen lectured in philosophy, physics, astronomy and mathematics, and Kant had unlimited access to his library. 1748 His studies finished, Kant worked as a private tutor to wealthy families. 1755 Back at University to begin his "doctorate," was a Privatdozent (unsalaried lecturer) for the next fifteen years, lecturing on issues in physics and physical geography. Kant's lectures were very popular, salted with humor and stories. His main aim was to stimulate his hearers to think for themselves. He published

IMMANUEL KANT (1724-1804)
Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher who began in the tradition of Continental rationalism (Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz), was awakened from his dogmatic slumber by Hume's attacks on the rationalist account of causality, and ended by producing a critical philosophy which in some ways synthesizes elements from both the empiricist tradition (Gassendi, Locke, Berkeley and Hume) and the Continental rationalists. At least, this is where Kant placed himself in the picture, whether accurately or not is open to question. Kant sought to show that some basic principles of science and mathematics which in fact tell us things about the world (and are therefore synthetic , could be known a priori that is by intuition alone without experience. While allowing that some synthetic a priori judgements are possible, Kant holds that a good deal of metaphysics which claims to know about the world by reasoning alone is illegitimate. The Kantian system has been enormously influential over the last two centuries. Kant's ethical works have also had an enormous influence. The distinction between categorical and hypothetical imperatives, the concept of the good will and the idea that ethical judgements should not be made on the basis of the consequences of actions but on whether they are right or not measured by the standard of the categorical imperative have made Kantianism a great contender with Utilitarianism and other ethical systems.
