Course Tutor: Eddie Duggan Office: A204C
Email: eddie.duggan@suffolk.ac.uk
Classes: PC Workshops Sessions:
Group A A206 Monday 9:30 - 11:30
Group B B410 Thursday 9:00 - 11:00 Tutorials by arrangement (see Tutorial Notice Board) Overview The aim of this module is to help you develop practical skills in computer-mediated communication technology. It's the Real Thing - But Is It Cold? A Coke Machine on the Internet A n interesting anecdote appears in Brendan P. Kehoe's Zen and the Art of the Internet about a Coke machine that was installed with microswitches. Programmers at Carnegie-Mellon were getting annoyed at having to walk down several floors to the Coke machine only to be presented with a warm bottle. To check to see if the bottles were cold before made the trip, they wrote a server program to keep track of how long each bottle had been in the machine. A status display let them know which button on the machine to push to get the coldest drink. Through use of the Unix "finger" command, they could even check the Coke machine status from anywhere on the Internet. Unfortunately with the demise of the returnable, Coke-shape bottles, a new machine was put in place, and this, along with the New Coke debacle, left programmers uninspired to wire up the new machine. T First written in 1992 as a booklet to serve the needs of Kehoe's Computer Science Department at Widener University, it has become a mainstay of the online generation, prophetic of the Internet age: "One warning is perhaps in order - this territory we are entering can become a fantastic time-sink. Hours can slip by, people can come and go, and you'll be locked into Cyberspace." So it is with this book. Zen and the Art of the Internet brims with the excitement of rediscovery. Even in this age when search engines routinely index billions of pages on the Web, Kehoe's excitement is tangible - interactions in real-time with users halfway around the world, the intricacies of e-mail address routing, flame wars and freedom of speech on Usenet - all these shine again, like polished silver, heirlooms.
